  3. Overview Formed near the Windward Islands on September 28, 2016. As a tropical storm, Matthew impacted Barbados, Dominica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines on September 28. On October 4, at 7:00am, Matthew made landfall near Les Anglais, Haiti (pop. 27, 182) as Categry 4 Hurricane It also severely impacted Guantanamo, Cuba as a category 4 Hurricane On October 6, at 6:00am made landfall near Exuma, Bahamas On October 6, it reached Florida, North and South Carolina

Haiti- Impact h • HealthFacilities • A total of 35 of 197 Health Facilities including hospitals, clinics, CTCs, CTUs and diagnostic clinics, were affected by the flood and heavy winds in the following departments: Grand’ Anse, Nippes, Nord-Ouest, Sud and Sud-Est • 16% (34 of 212) CTDA’s in the country were greatly affected

Bahamas-Impact • 4 persons affected, 601 persons in shelters • 28 out of 87 health facilities present some level of structural damage (excluding hospitals), due to Matthew. • The main challenge is the availability of staff, supplies and most importantly, reestablishing power and water in facilities to resume normal operations.

  6. Cuba- Impact and Needs • There are 365, 602 persons affected • Damages have been reported to 44 health institutions (2 hospitals, 17 polyclinics and 25 CMFs) in 10 municipalities. Priority actions: • Access to potable water, 2500 liter water tanks and water pumps for health institutions; • Epidemiologicalsurveillance and anti-vectorial actions: rapidtesting, larvicides and adulticides; • Essential medication- doxycycline and others; • Equipment for health institutions to continue saving lives- power generators of different engine power;

Haiti- PAHO Response Response • PAHO Emergency Response Team deployed • PAHO has delivered essential medicines and supplies to several departments • Supporting the assessments and evaluations of health facilities • Facilitating coordination of health response partners and with other sectors • 1 million doses of OCV deployed to Haiti

Haiti- Needs Priority Actions • Restore health care capacity in the most affected areas; • Reinforce epidemiological surveillance; • Increase vector control and ensure water quality and sanitation; • Ensure a rapid and effective response to cholera outbreaks in affected communities; • Support the efficient coordination and information management of humanitarian assistance in public health Needs • Food and water for shelters and general population in affected areas • Medical and cholera supplies, anti-tetanus serum, small surgical materials, tents, and cholera beds • Human resource needs for certain health facilities. • Support for reconstruction of CTDA • Support for data management, internet, computer, and fuel.

Haiti- Projects FUNDING REQUIREMENTS Health Sector • US$ 9 million requested for the first 3 months (Flash Appeal) PAHO/WHO • US$ 9.05 million requested for the first 3 months • (US$ 3.55 million for Flash Appeal + US$ 5.5 million for emergency cholera vaccination campaign) • US$ 11.5 million requested for the first 6 months response operations

Bahamas- PAHO Response • PAHO-BHS continues to support EOC Health operations and is completing telephone assessments of family clinics on islands in collaboration with MoH staff. • With support from PAHO Health Emergencies Department, PAHO-BHS assessed Sandilands Rehabilitation Center, Princess Margaret Hospital, Princess Margaret Rehabilitation Center, South Beach Health Center, and Ann’s Town Clinic. • PAHO-BHS will present the results of the rapid assessment of health facilities to the MoH and Public Hospital Authority officials.

  11. Cuba- Response • After Hurricane Matthew, one of the most significant tasks taken over by the affected municipalities is debris cleaning, in order to support sanitation measures. • MINSAP with MEDICUBA are coordinating the first shipment of supplies and materials for affected municipalities, facilitated by PAHO. • Coordination of emergency projects with the UN.

Summary of PAHO Actions • Assessments of health facilities in countries affected by the hurricane • Support to country governments and Ministries of Health • Provision of humanitarian assistance and supplies • Collaboration with UN Partners and NGOs • Deployment of experts to support response operations in affected countries
