Hip Hop. What is Hip Hop?. Hip Hop is a cultural movement that began in New York City during the 1970’s among African Americans and Latino Americans. Hip hop has four main parts: rapping, DJing, graffiti writing , and b-boying (breakdancing).

What is Hip Hop? • Hip Hop is a cultural movement that began in New York City during the 1970’s among African Americans and Latino Americans. • Hip hop has four main parts: rapping, DJing, graffiti writing, and b-boying (breakdancing). • Other elements include beatboxing, hip hop fashion, and hip hop slang. • These different parts showed what city life was like.

Hip hop gave young people of minority groups a voice to let their issues be noticed. • Early hip hop has often been credited with helping to reduce inner-city gang violence by replacing physical violence with dance and artwork battles. People used to break-dance against each other instead of fighting. • Hip hop culture became an outlet and a way of dealing with the hardships of life as minorities within America, and an outlet to deal with violence and gang culture.

Since first emerging in the Bronx and Harlem, the lifestyle of hip hop culture has spread around the world. • However, as Hip Hop has become more popular, the meaning and messages have changed to include negative things. • Many who appreciate old school hip hop are trying to challenge the new hip hop. They don’t want hip hop to be used in a bad way.
