  2. Fishery Management at Bajo de Cico • Red hind area seasonal closure (1996 both jurisdictions) • No bottom tending gear year-round (2005) • Shared area compatibility (2007) • No filleting of fish at sea • No Nassau harvest (1990 EEZ; PR 2004) • No fishing December-February each year

  3. SEASONAL AREA CLOSURES No bottom longlines, pots, traps, gillnets, trammel nets allowed year-round Bajo de Cico Abrir La Sierra

Purpose and Need • Potential spawning aggregations of groupers and snappers other than red hind • Nassau grouper in increasing numbers (rebuilding population) • Pristine habitat (EFH, HAPC year round closure to protect functionality of area as spawning site) • Yellowfin grouper reported (rebuilding population Grouper Unit 4)

  5. ISSUES • Use of traps in the area (no enforcement) • Potential harvest of Nassau grouper and other vulnerable species spawning at other times

  6. Management ALternatives • Action 1: Extend the closed season for Bajo de Cico • Alternative 1: No Action • Alternative 2: Extend closure from 3 to 6 months (prohibit all fishing)* • Alternative 3: Year round closure (prohibit all fishing)* *Allow fishing for pelagics and HMS
