  2. Why you are here? • Your student may be classified as an English Language Learner. • What English support we provide? • We want you to know how to help your student succeed! • We want you to get involved!

  3. English Language Learners (ELL) • Classification • Home Language Survey • Ca. English Language Development Test (CELDT) • Placed into proper English class and support class if needed. • English Language Development Program (ELD): In US 1-5 years • Grade-level mainstream English class: 5+ years

Purpose of CELDT • Assess students who are English Learners • Determine their level of English Proficiency • Assess their progress toward acquiring English proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking • Levels: 1. Beginning 2. Early Intermediate 3. Intermediate 4. Early Advanced 5. Advanced

  5. Programs for English Language Learners (ELL)

  6. Reclassification • Reclassified Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) • Basic or above on ELA portion of CST or passes the ELA portion of CAHSEE • Early Advanced or higher on Overall portion of CELDT • Intermediate or higher on individual CELDT subtest • AND 19+ on SOLOM Evaluation • AND parent consent

  7. Helping your Student • Make sure your child attends school everyday. • Ask your child about school and ask to see homework • Encourage your child to read • Maintain good communication with your child’s teachers: Email and attend school events • Power School Parent Portal for grades

English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) • Advice the principal and school staff on programs and services provided to the English Language Learners. • Advice the School Site Council on the development of the Single Plan for Student Achievement. • Assist with the school’s needs assessment • Assist with the school’s language census • Assist with the school’s efforts to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance • Assist in promoting and increasing parent involvement
