  6. So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:28

  7. So they gathered together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the Lord. And they fasted that day, and said there, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah. 1 Samuel 7:6

  8. And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 2 Samuel 1:12

  26. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Matthew 6:17–18

  30. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. Matthew 23:4

  31. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ Luke 18:11–12

  32. Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

  33. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:29–30

  34. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

  36. Fasting is not Ritual but Relational v.3 - should we keep fasting as have done v.5 - are you really fasting for God v.8 - what God wants is changed, unselfish lives 8:19 - Joyful feasts instead

Fasting is not Ritual but Relational Jesus pictures actions from a relationship Bridegroom, friends, with them, with them Any fasting should be guided by relationship Danger of old wineskins/clothes Men have tendency to make rituals, legalism God is calling us into relationship NEW verses OLD - fresh, alive

  41. For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. John 5:16

  42. But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” John 5:17

  43. Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. John 5:19

  44. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. John 5:20
