  2. Filters, beam dividers and dichroics will be treated separately in terms of the following:- Design updates for PFM Qualification status Status and PFM schedule Open issues & problems Interface control and documentation status is common, and will be covered first Overview Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 2

  3. EIDP status – delivered documents CQM deliverables:- (GSE) AIV CBB and cryostat filters – 27th January 2004 – HSO-CDF-EIDP-069 Instrument filters & dichroics – HSO-CDF-EIDP-056 – 16th October 2003 300mK PLW filter stack – HSO-CDF-EIDP-054 – 2nd October 2003 PFM deliverables:- 300mK filters – all channels complete PLW - HSO-CDF-EIDP-061 PMW – HSO-CDF-EIDP-057 PSW – HSO-CDF-EIDP-062 SSW and SLW – HSO-CDF-EIDP-055 GSE PFM alignment tools metrology report – HSO-CDF-RP-070 Interface control & documentation Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 3

  4. EIDP status (continued) PFM Instrument filters – HSO-CDF-EIDP-059 Document formal release imminent following suggested revisions (to document and electronic data format) at DRB. PFM Beam dividers and dichroics – HSO-CDF-EIDP-060 Document in preparation. Release due mid August. FS deliverables:- FS SSW filter stack – HSO-CDF-EIDP-058 – delivered 27th February 2004 Interface control & documentation Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 4

  5. Current released ICD – HSO-CDF-ICD-012 – Issue 3.0. 5th June 2003. Contains estimated masses and thicknesses. Final PFM issue (issue 4.0) will be released by end July 2004 with PFM instrument filters EIDP. Will contain actual measured component thicknesses and masses (all within estimates in existing issue). Filters design description. First issue will be released by mid-August 2004. Full description of PFM filters, beam dividers and dichroics, and expected overall instrument filtering performance. Filters specification document. Current issue – HSO-CDF-SP-002 issue 2.2 – 29th October 2002. Not updated for CQM deliverables – specs. in EIDP. PFM issue will be released with PFM instrument filters EIDP. Interface control & documentation Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 5

  6. Filters FMECA – HSO-CDF-RP-031 – Issue 2.0. 25th January 2002 Needs updating to include spectrometer 300mK lenses DML / DPL Overall Cardiff Declared Materials / Parts / Processes Lists for all SPIRE deliverables will be updated and complete by early August. Interface control & documentation Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 6

  7. Filters No design updates between CQM and PFM Beam dividers Internal NCR raised – prototype PFM component (vacuum-gap, ring mounted) displayed evidence of bowing on first cold test. Design changed to pre-stretched hot-pressed component Optical performance slightly better! (improved material & recipe) DM components (to flight design) have survived cold vibration, and cold tests show no evidence of warping. PFM components manufactured & in final qualification now – thermal / vacuum cycling, cold transmission/reflection tests. PFM Design Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 7

  8. Dichroics Following beam divider NCR, the design of the dichroics has been thoroughly investigated. These were already baselined as hot-pressed components. Extensive tests at unit level show no problems. CQM tests at SPIRE instrument level show no evidence of the beam divider effect (no shift in edge position). PFM design is therefore unchanged from CQM. PFM Design Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 8

  9. Qualification status • Filters • Fully qualified for flight • Radiation effects not tested – use heritage from ISO, Cassini, SIRTF…… • Beam dividers • See previous slide – DM models (exact copies of new flight design) have survived warm & cold vibration with no problems, along with multiple thermal vac. cycles (to 77K) for cold spectroscopic tests. • Flight components manufactured, and undergoing cold spectroscopic tests (transmission & reflection), & thermal cycles (to 4K, in SPIRE mount). • Dichroics • Cold spectroscopic measurements in progress on copies of flight components. • Pre- and post SPIRE-CQM cold shake visual inspection indicate no problems. • Dichroics not shaken at unit level. • Similar components flown on BLAST & Cassini Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 9

  10. Programme status & PFM schedule • GSE • New set of alignment tools delivered for PFM alignment – greater transmission wrt. CQM set • PFM Instrument filters • PFM set complete & ready for delivery, pending EIDP modifications. • PFM 300mK BDA filters & lenses • All PFM components delivered with EIDPs • PFM Beam dividers • PFM components assembled. In qualification / acceptance testing. • PFM Dichroics • PFM parts ready for assembly. Filters, Beam Splitters & Dichroics Peter Hargrave, Cardiff University 10

  11. Open issue / problems • Qualification of beam dividers • OK so far, but…… • Beam divider mounts • One CQM mount seems to have a manufacturing error. This has been raised with MSSL, and they are providing Cardiff with the PFM component drawings, and checking the PFM mounts. • 300mK spectrometer filter stacks / lenses • PFM components exceed requirements. • BUT – pass-band can now be greatly improved by A/R coating the lens & bonding the filters together. • Replacement A/R coated polypropylene lenses with bonded filter stacks are being produced nominally for FS. Change request will be placed when available to upgrade PFM stacks. • PFM PFIL3 • Component exceeds specification, but has ripple in pass band (15-19cm-1) which affects PLW overall transmission. • Upgrade now available – change request will be placed.
