  3. What is Autism?... • Autism is a life-long developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. • It is thought to be the result of a neurological disorder that affects functioning of the brain, causing certain symptoms. http://facesforkids.org/

  4. Signs of Childhood Autism… • Delayed or lack of speech • Repetitive movement of body (Arms, Head) • Impaired social skills • Limited interest in activities or play

  6. What is Asperger’s?... • Asperger's disorder, is a type of pervasive development disorder. • PDDs are a group of conditions that involve delays in the development of many basic skills, most notably the ability to socialize with others, to communicate, and to use imagination

  7. Signs of Asperger’s Syndrome… • Talk a lot, usually about a favorite subject. To Best Help a Child with Asperger’s Syndrome… • Learn about the disease. • Provide a supportive and loving environment. • Give the child a daily routine for meals, homework, bedtime. • Give them specific rules, causes less stress. • Teach them by being verbal and a straightforward manner. • Use Visual supports: schedules and other written materials that serve as organizational aids. • Don’t expect them to act their age, they mature slower. • Encourage the child to be social.
