  1. Eagle Training Center February 25th, 2012 Saturday Skills

  2. Principles of Dynamic Attack Build Shape Attack Weakness Create Fast Ball

  3. Building Shape and Attacking Weakness To build dynamic play players need to be able to build appropriate attacking shapes (wide, tight) relative to the defense, and then attack the weakness. This session is focused on building the appropriate shape and then making decisions about where to attack.

  4. Outcomes At the end of the session the players will be able to: • Catch and pass using the second hand position • Evade the tackler in the open field using footwork and fend • Create appropriate shape to attack – tight and wide channels • Be a play-maker at the tackle line • Change support lines to strike • Field different types of kick

  5. Sunday Session 70m Shuttle test Tumbling catches Gauntlet passing Continuous passing Tight and wide channel attack 1v1 Evasion 3v3/4v4/5v5

  6. Tumbling • 2 players with a ball, one player throws it high behind the other player who retreats to catch it. She then sends the ball back along the ground (like a grubber) • Progression is to add 2 balls so both players are constantly moving • Catching kick key factors: • Keep feet moving • Turn sideways • Catch in the bread basket • Call for the ball • Catching grubber key factors • Keep feet moving • Turn sideways • Keep hands low and bring ball into body • Call for the ball • Video • http://vimeo.com/37210796 P P

  7. Passing Types The Women’s Eagles are focusing on 3 passing types: Pop – left in the air for a runner Flat – horizontal pass for 5m Spin – horizontal pass for more than 5m Coaches should talk about the different types and develop ways to have the players choose different passes.

  8. Gauntlet Passing • The passer runs betweentwofeeders. The feedersthrow flat passes toputthepasserunderpressure. • The runnerneedstorunatleast 5m pastthefeedersbeforeturningaround. • Progression: havethefeeders move furtheraway • Progression: have a dummy defender runbackandforth in oppositedirectionsofthepasser. • Coaching points: • Hands are in second position (atwaistlevelwithpalmsupandfingerstowardstheball) • Hipsstaysquare • Watchthepassintothehandsofthereceiver • Move theball in onemovement • Feederswork in theirpassing! • Video • http://vimeo.com/37210795 F P F

  9. Continuous Passing • Players line up in 1s and 2s behind cones. Vertical cones are 10m apart and width is determined by pass required by coach. Have the number of channels so there are no more than 3 players behind each channel • The first player runs up to ball and passes from the ground to the next runner (1) who passes across to the last runner (2), who turns at the end and passes to the runner directly behind (3), who then passes to the left (4, 5). When the ball is at the end they pass to the player behind and it continues. • Progressions (there are lots so be creative!) • Do not allow players to reset to the same cone • Change distances between cones so players have to change their type of • pass • Have first player pass and follow to switch (pop) with each runner • Have ball put down at the end for pass from the ground to come back • Count the number of passes between drops • Video • https://vimeo.com/37269303

  11. Tight and Wide Channel • 2 channels set up 5m and 20m wide. • Initially players move down 5m channel passing the ball and bursting onto the ball (pop) passes. • At the end of the channel they pass the ball to the coach and re-align to attack wide channel, trying to get the ball from the coach quickly. • Add 2 defenders who start on 2 different cones in the tight channel then move to defend the wide channel • Coaching points • Focus is players moving off the ball to be in position. Channel runners need to move early to the wide channel to build shape • BCs should step away from the pass • BCs should use the appropriate pass • Once defenders are introduced BC must focus on their decision making • No Video! C

  12. 1v1 Evasion • Warm up with a “telephone box drill” where the players imagine they are in an old English telephone box. They start 1m away from each other and the BC attacks and needs to avoid the strong shoulder. • Then move to the grid drill to the right. Very basic approach to evasion. Start by giving the attacker space (20m) and then reduce to provide pressure. • Coaching points: • Move the defender early • Take short steps to change direction • Move the ball away from the defender and use stiff arm • Stay low to drop center of gravity • No video!

  13. 3v3/4v4/5v5 This is a chance for the players to play. The coach manipulates the defense to be bunched (1) or spread (2) or flat (3). The attack aligns when the coach says “go” and the defense can move when the coach passes the ball. “rough touch” or grab defense. You can let them just play against each other at the end – and join in! No Video! 2 2 1 1 1 1 2 2 3 3 3 3 C • Coaching points • Attack builds shape relative to defense • Support players need to change lines to attack space • Angle in towards the ball before you receive it • 1st receiver depth based on attack (close attack = flat, wide attack = deep)
