  1. Societal Problems Learning about Societal Problems

  2. Unit Summary • After reading Tears of a Tiger, students will conduct research on a societal problem. They will research the causes and effects of that problem, as well as prevention methods, etc. They will then present a multi-media project to the class.

  3. Curriculum-Framing Questions • Essential Question What are societal issues? • Unit QuestionsWhat societal problems are addressed in the novel Tears of a Tiger? • Content Questions What does the reader learn about the causes and effects of current societal issues by reading this novel? What symbolism does the author use to convey the issues in the novel? What prevention methods are used in this novel?

  4. Vision for the Project • Students should learn how to: • Effectively utilize 21st century technology to locate, analyze, and present information. • Successfully collaborate to learn about the causes and effects of a societal problem that people face. • Successfully collaborate to learn about community resources and prevent methods for anyone who is encountering the problem they are researching. • Help and inform others in the future who may be encountering problems that we discuss during this project.

  5. What I’d like to learn • More about how to effectively use Microsoft Office programs to present information. • Learn how to effectively integrate a variety of technology when teaching units. • Learn how to teach students how to use the technology independently.

  6. Gauging Student Needs Assessments • Purpose of the Assessment • To gather information about what students already know about societal problems, and analyze their ability to locate and present reliable information using 21st century technology • What I want to learn from my students? • I want to find out what they already know about the Unit Questions and what they know about issues that currently exist in society. • How I have tried to promote higher-order thinking? • Students must choose their own topic and research what could be causing the problems in society and the effects. • How the assessment information helps me and my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit?

  7. Request Feedback • I would appreciate any feedback on how to assess student presentations. • Also, I would appreciate any information on how to ensure students will all share the workload and participate throughout the project (I’ve tried roles in the past, and have not been as successful as I would like).
