  2. Honorable to die in battle Today • The veterans who have fought in wars are honored more than anybody else. Those who have died in war are remembered and praised. Ancient Epic • In the Iliad Hector believe that he would rather die fighting than seen as a coward and retreat. Also, the Trojans refused to surrender even though they had no chance to win.

  3. Burial is important Today • This belief has changed a little bit. Now, just about everyone is buried. Burial is expected. People will try their hardest to get the money to bury someone if they can not afford it. Ancient Epics • In the Iliad Hector must be buried. It is so important that the war is stalled for 11 days while the burial is happening. In Ramayana Rama believes that Ravana needs to be buried even though he was the enemy.

  4. Don’t dwell on the past Today It has changed a lot. People today dwell on the past. If there is a harsh catastrophic event then we will dwell on it and remember it. For example The Holocaust and 9/11. Ancient Epics • The lesson was to not mourn for the dead or the past because it does not help anything. In the Indian Epics Gita and Ramyana they believe that your soul is reincarnated and you live forever so there is no need to mourn for the dead.

  5. Gods intervene Today • Today people still believe in God. People believe that he does not intervene but that God can perform miracles if you pray and believe in him. Ancient Epics • In Gilgamesh the gods decide when people die. In the Illiad and the Aeneid the gods decide your fate. In Ramayana the gods are influenced by sacrifice and offerings.
