  7. CEOS & GOIN Performance Test Sites

  8. Argentina (CONAE): Performance improved 7-00 Thruput now about 300 kbps via Telintar Was 200 kbps previously (20 kbps in ‘96) Australia (CSIRO): Testing Resumed June 00 Performance 50-250 kbps until mid August, then 100-800 kbps Route via Optus Brazil (INPE - Sao Paolo) : Now testing: 2 routes Via NASA dedicated 64kbps circuit (IDN): 25 kbps steady Via Embratel (HSB): 10-650 kbps (median 25!) Upgrades planned 2*E1 -> E3 -> OC3 Canada (CCRS- Ottawa): Stable since Sept. 99 Route stable -- direct peering between NISN and CA*Net3 in Chicago -- to CCRS via a 5 mbps access circuit. Business Hours Median (BHM) 3 Mbps Site Updates

  9. China: START Regional Center No performance testing since 8/99 (was 18 kbps)-- resume?? Route via AT&T, satellite -- appears highly congested APAN would be better Germany: DLR (Oberpfaffenhofen): Test host unresponsive since 7/99 Germany: Eumetsat (Darmstadt): Performance testing still not running -- try again? Still using EU-Xlink via Qwest Israel: Performance Stable Route via direct peering with ILAN in Chicago Thruput steady at about 1.7 mbps, using TCP spoofing! Was about 100 kbps until Feb 00 Datasink stopped in July 00 -- will try to restart. Site Updates (cont.)

  10. Italy (ESRIN - Frascati): Improved on 15 July 00 BHM increased to 970 kbps (was 55 kbps prev) Typical daily range 350-1500 kbps Due in part to NASA use of Abilene to get to Garr in NY Avoids congestion at MAE-E Italy (CEO/JRC - Ispra): Datasink down July 00 BH Median increased to about 900 kbps in April 00 (was 140 Kbps); average daily peak is down to about 1300 kbps (was 1700) New Route: AlterNet all the way! Reduced congestion. Malaysia (UKM): Testing stopped June 00 Thruput tested 19-20 Jan 2000: 30 kbps Route via ATT.net, satellite Site Updates (cont.)

  11. Japan (NASDA EOC - Hatoyama): 2 routes NASA-NASDA removed private E1 and installed private 3 mbps ATM service on 8 Feb 2000 -- for mission support only. Performance stable - typically 1.9 mbps Now using TransPAC for Science traffic Performance stable - typically 1.4 Mbps Japan (Tokai Univ -Tokyo) : Testing started 9-99 (FTP) -- Results stable Typical range 50-370 kbps (median = 230 kbps) Route now via AlterNet to Tokyo Netherlands (SurfNet): testing started May 00 Route from GSFC initially via Commodity Internet to SurfNet in NY, started using Abilene in July 00 Performance initially 2-3 mbps, now 10-18 mbps Site Updates (cont.)

  12. Russia (IRE-RAS - Moscow): Sink down since 2/24 Current Route is via Internet -- Rostelecom, Relarn Other possibilities: MIRnet, or NASA dedicated circuit Performance was BHM = 14 kbps, Daily range = 3 - 260 kbps Russia (CAO): SAGE III Project Route currently via Teleglobe -- plan to use NASA dedicated circuit Performance typically 7-56 kbps; median 25 Thailand (AIT): Testing via 2 routes Good Route: Abilene-TransPac-APAN: 75-260 kbps (median 200) Commodity Route: AlterNet-WorldNet: 8-160 kbps (median 20) Thailand (SeaStart) : Performance dropped June 00 now: Median BH = 25 kbps, Typical daily peak = 75 kbps was: Median BH = 54 kbps, Typical daily peak = 136 kbps Route via Commodity Internet -> NY, then Teleglobe via satellite Serious congestion Site Updates (cont.)

  13. UK Added tests to RAL and JAnet core (in addition to UCL and Oxford) from GSFC and JPL Three routes: NASA dedicated ATM (VC = 2 Mbps) GSFC, LaRC - UCL thruput Steady -- BH: Median = 1.3 Mbps, Min = 1.2 Mbps GSFC - Oxford: 0.7-1.7 mbps via NASA-dedicated ckt. to JAnet in London JAnet peering in NY: GSFC via AlterNet 28 - 4500 kbps (BHM= 900) Highly Congested (in US) JAnet peering in NY: GSFC, JPL via Abilene GSFC - JAnet: Improved: 16-23 Mbps typ (was 2.7 mbps). JPL - JAnet peaks over 10 mbps GSFC - RAL 10-15 mbps via Abilene-JAnet Site Updates (cont.)

  14. UNEP: testing to 6 sites via Geneva to UNEP satellites Increasing congestion noted to Geneva (thus all sites) from 6/00 Test Host changes 15 July improving performance somewhat Geneva: Daily peaks still typ 400 kbps, but dips now 100 (were 300) Norway: decreased 2 June now 50-100 kbps (was 100-200 kbps) Beijing: now 40-80 kbps (was 60 kbps steady) Bangkok: now steady at 40 kbps Nairobi: now 50-230 kbps (was 120 kbps steady) Costa Rica: still 90 kbps steady, with congestion building. Site Updates (cont.)
