  2. Manatees… • Are also called sea cows. There scientific name is TrichechidaeTrichechus. They live in water… duh. They are gentle giants. 

  3. Where they live… • Manatee's live in the shallow, marshy areas and rivers of the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, Amazon, and West Africa. They normally travel in groups.

  4. Migration… • They enjoy warmer waters and are known to live in shallow waters, and frequently migrate to freshwater springs.

  5. What they eat… • Manatee’s are herbivores. They eat lots of plants such as turtle grass and algae.

  6. What eats them… • Manatees have very few predators. Alligators, crocodiles, and sharks are there natural predators. This predation does not however effect their survival.

  7. Human Interference… • Manatees are curious animals. Therefore they swim slowly and sometimes get caught in the propellers of ships. They are used for game by the Caribbean's people. They occasionally eat fishing line, and the string clogs the digestive system. There are still foundations to save them.

  8. Endangered… yes or no? • In Florida, Manatees are listed as endangered. It is illegal to kill or harm a Manatee. There are many state laws on protecting the Manatees.

  9. How to help… • Go to http://www.savethemanatee.org/ and make a donation to help save the sea cow. You can also adopt a Manatee!

Fun Facts • Did you know that manatees have three fingernails on each flipper and when they get into shallow water the manatee walks on its nails? • Did you know that manatees never stop losing teeth.
