Stuck in the Web… • Case Study – Margaret • World War II widow, single working mom, native of LA area • After house fire, she and son relocate to SD, move in with RN • Son dies, unusual circumstances • RN slowly begins transferring assets • Family notifies Adult Protective Services • Investigation: RN has history of clients who die in suspicious circumstances. RN has history of transferring clients’ estate planning documents. Margaret now trusts RN and is resistant to intervention.

Stuck in the Web… Margaret’s Outcome • Despite resistance to intervention, Margaret accepted psychiatric evaluation • Public guardian engaged, conservatorship proceedings launched • Court instituted protective measures, supervised visits, protection of remaining assets • Margaret now in assisted living near home, reunited with friends, family, and church organization
