Math Greater Focus and Coherence • Move away from “mile wide and an inch deep” • Aim for clarity and specificity • The K-12 standards stress conceptual knowledge and understanding in addition to procedural skills • Students who master the K-5 standards will have a strong foundation in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and the basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

  3. K‐5 Domains • Counting and Cardinality (K only) • Operations and Algebraic Thinking (Grades 1‐5) • Number and Operations in Base Ten (Grades 1‐5) • Number and Operations‐‐Fractions (Grades 3‐5) • Measurement and Data (Grades 1‐5) • Geometry (Grades 1‐5)

  4. Major Shifts K‐5 • Numeration and operation intensified, and introduced earlier • Early place value foundations in grade K • Regrouping as composing / decomposing in grade 2 • Decimals to hundredths in grade 4 • All three types of measurement simultaneously (Non‐standard, English and Metric) • Emphasis on fractions as numbers • Emphasis on number line as visualization /structure

First Challenge ~ • Teachers need to KNOW what they need to teach and HOW it is different than what they taught previously. • While Common Core may require teachers teach less, the less is more in depth since academic rigor increases at each grade level. • Common Core emphasis requires some concepts will be taught in earlier grades while others are moved to later in a student's educational career.  ex: adding and subtracting numbers fluently appears in 2nd grade instead of 3rd – understanding multiplication and division moves from 2nd to 3rd grade.   • Take a look at the Common Core Standards Aligned with our Math GLCEs • What changes do you see to your curriculum - Record • What’s moving in? Second Challenge ~ • Teachers need to UNDERSTAND the new standards and HOW to teach them to ensure a deeper understanding. • Common Core focuses on building conceptual understanding, and a deep understanding of: number and operations, place value and number sense • Engaging instructional material and resources should -- • provide for a conceptual understanding so students understand the procedural algorithms (understand WHY not just HOW) • support a vigorous math foundation • utilize virtual (and hands-on) manipulatives to teach concepts • adapt to each student's level with a variety of strategies • utilize instruction and practice that is engaging • integrate instruction and assessment • Choose one or two domains to analyze with your grade level • Common Core Domain Analysis

Language Arts Integrated Model of Literacy Across the Curriculum • Move away from “mile wide and an inch deep” • Broad expectations that are consistent across the grade levels • Build upon a “staircase” of skills to ensure students possess College and Career readiness skills • Grade-specific end-of-year expectations

  9. K‐5 Strands • Reading (including Foundational Skills) • Writing • Speaking & Listening • Language

Challenges ~ • Teachers need to KNOW what they need to teach and HOW it is different than what they taught previously. • Teachers need to UNDERSTAND the new standards and HOW to teach them to ensure a deeper understanding. • While Common Core may require teachers teach less, the less is more in depth since academic rigor increases at each grade level. • Common Core requires students read and comprehend high-quality literature and informational text in a variety of genres across the curriculum while focusing on increasing text-complexity  • Common Core requires students to write specific text types and for specific purposes. These include: writing arguments to support claims, writing informative and explanatory texts, and writing narratives
