It all started when Ban Johnson, president of the American League (AL) club, moved the Baltimore franchise to compete with the Giants. • They newly formed group played in Hilltop Park, on the Upper East Side, but later moved to Polo Grounds and were called the Yankees. • In the season on 1915 the Yankees Pins and Stripes were seen for the first time. • History was made in January 1920, when the Yankees bought Babe Ruth from what is now their most rivaled team, the Boston Red Sox, starting one of the best known curses in baseball history, the curse of the Bambino. How It All Began The Yankees are one of the most successful baseball franchises in history. They have come an extremely long way since the 1900s.

  3. History in the Making • Because of the growing popularity of the team, and especially the trade of Babe Ruth, the Yankees became very popular. This helped finance building Yankee Stadium, with its nickname "The House That Ruth Built." • In their new home, Yankee Stadium, they won a countless number of games and won their first World Series starting their 26 year World Series winnings. The most championships any team in the history of sports has ever won.

  8. Famous Yankee #3 • Babe Ruth: Born on February 6, 1895. He was traded from The Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees in 1920. • In 1935 he retired from the Yankees in hopes of becoming the manager of the National League’s Boston Braves. • 1946 Babe was diagnosed with throat cancer and spent three months in the hospital. He Died in August 16, 1948

  9. Famous Yankee #7 • Mickey Mantle- Born on October 20, 1931. He played his first game for the Yankees in 1951. • Mickey was voted the American League's MVP in 1956, 1957 and 1962. He won seven World Series championships with the Yankees but then retired on March 1, 1969.

  10. Famous Yankee #8 • Yogi Berra’s given name was Lawrence Peter. He received his nick name, Yogi Berra from the cartoon “Yogi Berra” • Yogi Berra- Born on May 12, 1925. Played for the Yankees in 1946 until 1963 • Berra has more World Series rings than any other man in baseball history • He was known for his funny quotes that often contradicted himself such as “It gets late early out there” • His number was retired in 1972.

Famous Yankee # 23 • Don Mattingly- Born April 20, 1961.He played for the Yankees in 1982 to 1995 • In January 1997 Mattingly officially announced his retirement from baseball • Yankees announced that his number 23 would be retired, with a ceremony to take place during the 1997 season • He is now the current Batting Coach of the Yankees
