Evaluating Safety Performance by Segment

This study analyzes the safety performance of different commodity segments in the motor carrier industry. It examines which segments are the safest and least safe, if the results are consistent over time, and if the differences are statistically significant. The study provides insights for regulatory development and industry improvement.

  5. Motor Carrier Industry Profile Study Analytical Approach • Calculate means (avg) • For each segment • For each of 9 measures • Compare means across segments, for each measure • Multiple Comparisons (statistical) Testing • 95% confidence level • Rank Segments by Mean Scores • “B” = best performer • “W” = worst performer

  6. Sample 2002 Results

  7. Sample 3-Yr Results (2000-2002) * Upper case “B” or “W” denotes significantly better or worse performance than peers

  8. INDUSTRY PROFILE STUDYHow are results being used? • Regulatory development • Passenger Carriers - crash profile • Studies for Reauthorization • Intermodal Carriers – vehicle condition

  9. 3-Year Results (2000-2002) Conclusions • “Safer” segments • Bus • Tank • “Less safe” segments • HH Goods • Intermodal • Produce • Bulk • Overall Rankings are qualitative & relative
