  1. Development of Vocational Educational Module and use of Haptic Devices: Virtual Laboratories for VLSI and Embedded Systems Presented by N. P. Maity Assistant Professor & Head Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering Mizoram University (A Central University) Aizawl- 796009 Mizoram University (A Central University), Aizawl-796009

  2. About Mizoram Lies between 21o 58’ and 24o35’ N Latitudes and 92o15’ and 93o 29’ E Longitudes Literacy rate 88.80% (2001), the second most literacy rate in India

  3. About Mizoram University • Mizoram University was established on 2nd July 2001 by the Mizoram University Act, 2000 as a Central University. • The permanent campus of Mizoram University rests on a plot of land measuring 978.1988 acres • No. of Schools functioning at present :  07 • No. of departments functioning at present :  28 • No. of UG colleges affiliated to the University: 25 • No. of Professional Institute affiliated to the University: 02

  4. About School of Engineering & Technology • The School for the Mizoram University sanctioned during Xth Plan • Functional Department: 1. Department of Information Technology 2. Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering • In the session 2010 (Sanctioned in XIth Plan): 1. Electrical Engineering 2. Computer Science & Engineering • B. Tech., M. Tech., Ph. D. with diverse specialization • The initial focus is to impart high quality education with required practical inputs and industrial Training under University - Industry Interaction

  5. Why VLSI Design • The opportunity in VLSI (Electronics Design) are increasing exponentially • India currently constitutes only about 0.5 % of the total VLSI business • Around 120 companies being operational in India • Market needed specialized VLSI Engineers by providing them the requisite real time design tools employed for electronics Design • Last year we produced 10,000 technical professionals against a requirement of 50,000 (Ministry of Information Technology), the demand for VLSI Engineers far exceeds the supply • Major Silicon Design companies are reducing their headcount in North America/Europe and increasing it in India

  6. Objectives of the Project • To deploy “IMAGE VLSI and Embedded System Laboratory” infrastructure in Mizoram University. • To deliver educational content to the students using distance learning facilities provided by Centre for Distance Engineering Education Program (CDEEP), IIT Bombay. • To produce qualified VLSI & Embedded professionals and faculty.

  7. Methodology • Setting up of the basic infrastructure called “IMAGE VLSI and Embedded System Laboratory” in Mizoram University. This global standard infrastructure will make our Laboratory at par with IITs and international universities. • Perpetual licensing of all software tools having onsite support • Training of the Teachers in the educational contents in the area of VLSI Design & Embedded system at the Remote Centre • Training of the students, at the Remote Centre, in the educational contents in the area of VLSI Design & Embedded system including Hardware Description Languages, Simulation and synthesis, and the use of FPGAs • Streaming video interface to the Internet for delivery of the courses designed by the Centre for Distance Engineering Education Program (CDEEP), IIT Bombay • Establishing web interface to the software tools with adequate network connectivity

  8. Content Delivery for Teacher Training & Students • To train the teachers at the remote centers, CDEEP will deliver course content in the area of VLSI Design and Embedded Systems to the remote centers by means of regular onsite visits by certified personnel • It will include the provision of training on CAD tools, assistance in course homework and assignments, coordination between the remote centre and course instructor at IIT Bombay • A series of online laboratory courses in HDL, Simulation and Synthesis • The Use of FPGAs

  9. Suggested Courses for Training students & teachers • VLSI System Design • VLSI Circuit Design • Hardware Description Languages • Embedded Systems • Computer Systems • VLSI Design Lab • Modern Electronics Design Techniques • Digital Circuit Lab • Foundation of VLSI • Basic Electronics

  10. Justifications for having VLSI Laboratory in Mizoram University • Remoteness of the place: Mizoram is remotely located. This will provide great opportunity for our students to be in sync with the latest in the global job market. • Poor infrastructure: For Engineering & Technology Education in the state; it will enable latest technology infrastructure at our University • Inadequate Faculty: In spite of the availability of teaching positions, university is unable to recruit qualified faculty. We can tap IIT Bombay faculty run courses to build skills for our faculty as well as enable our students to benefit directly from the IIT courses.

  11. Financial requirementDetails of funds requested for 5 years along with phasing for each year:Cost in Lacs Rs. (1 Lac = 100,000) Total = Rupee Three Crore ninety five lacs only

  12. IMAGE VLSI & Embedded Laboratory 05 • Customized High Computational Servers and Computers • NGSPICE, NGNUTMEG (Circuit Simulator & Result Viewer) • GHDL (VHDL Simulator) • Xilinx ISE (FPGA synthesis tool set) • IMAGE Simulation accelerator (FPGA based environment) • HookIN (Random internal signal visibility tool) • IMAGE ForceIT (Controllability tool) • MiRAGE (Memory Extraction tool) • IMAGE API (For Embedded System & Prototyping) • IMAGE TDM (For data exchange between four FPGAs) • IMAGE ScaleUP (For adding more four FPGA PCB card on the machine) Contd…

  13. IMAGE FPGA Boards (Total capacity of 100 Million FPGA gates) • Mixed HDL Support (VHDL & Verilog) • Part IT (Design partition tool) • IMAGE Signal Coding (VHDL std. logic type and Verilog wire types can be coded as multi-valued typed) • Embedded Software Development (Mapped to Hardware by the Software) • All software tools will have a perpetual license. • A series of online tutorials describing the use of CAD tools.

  14. Infrastructure facilities • Adequate network connectivity • Web interface to the software tools or an EDUSAT terminal for receiving CDEEP courses. • Onsite teaching aids at the remote center

  15. Onsite Support & Maintenance of Equipments • The detailed training program to be conducted for the onsite faculty members after the installation of the tools. • Equipments maintenance • Based on the IIT Bombay Professor conducting the courses, at least one visit per two weeks to four weeks will be conducted during the tenure of the courses. • IMAGE Learning Resources (ILR): ILR-Video (Teaching by CDs from eminent IIT Professor) & ILR-Books (Lab Exercise Books) • Video interface for delivery of CDEEP courses.

  16. Manpower • Project Assistant: One (To do the laboratory work) • Technical Assistant: One (To Maintain the laboratory) • Attendant/Peon: One (For administrative work)

  17. At a Glance • Provide scope for students to carry out projects • Provide scope for teachers to initiate research in this technology • Greater job opportunities for the products of the University • It is evident therefore that the University is developing one and is remotely located. It needs IIT Bombay’s CDEEP support and IIT Bombay par Laboratory Infrastructure to become world-class.
