Homes • Paiute: brush shelters • Miwok: houses of wood • Some Indian tribes: teepees • Some Pomo tribes: teepees • Ute: cone shaped houses • Most Western tribes: pit houses, planks split from redwood • Cherokee: teepee • Navajo: hogans • If they would moved they would use teepees because it was easy to move. • If they didn’t move houses of wood and other strong houses would stay up and wouldn’t fall down. • They used brush, redwood, and animal skins to make their homes because they were available to them.

  3. Way of Life • Pomo: each tribe live in extended families • Most indians of the west were hunters. • Sometimes they settled in the same place and sometimes they moved. • Yokut indians made baskets, houses, boats, and mats. • Chumash indians made cooking tools, bowls, and clothing.

Foods • Pomo: gathered acorns ,berries, bulbous and seaweed caught fish, and hunted deer ,elk ,rabbits, and sea lions. • Youkuts: Their main foods are fish ,waterfowl ,shelfish, roots ,and seeds • Paiute: They hunted antelope, deer ,moutainsheep , rabbits ,and other game. They also collected berries ,nuts ,nuts ,roots ,and seeds. They also fished , planted beans ,corn ,and squash • Shoshone: They searched for seeds ,roots , fish, birds and small animals. Such as rabbits also they ate buffalo. • Ute: They hunted such as antelope, buffalo, elk ,and deer. They gathered berries ,nuts , roots , and seeds. • Cherokee: Their main food is corn. They ate berries , nuts , squash , and fish. • The most common foods were roots & berries. • Some odd foods were roots , seaweed ,and moutainlions.

Interesting Facts • Pomos spoke 7 different languages . • The pomos were famous for making water tipe baskets that decorated with beeds, shells , and feathers. • Life ways disrupted by mining boom ,into a life stock which destroyed plant food • Today ,about 1,200 Yokuts live on reservation or in rancherias
