CURRICULUM AUDIT • Head of Pedagogy and interested teachers were given time release to look at Asian Literacy in our curriculum • Found that we weren’t rigorous and in some cases teachers would not teach Asian content at all • This team made sure that elements of Asia were taught throughout Year 7-10 particularly in Humanities and English areas of the curriculum and that there is a continuum between year levels

ENHANCING ASIAN LITERACY IN THE CURRICLUM YEAR 7 • all students study Chinese Civilization • Australian and Asian Geography • Study the novel “Boy overboard” – refugees YEAR 8 • Chinese and Indian Inventors • Asian Landforms YEAR 9 • Globalisation • Immigration and Origins YEAR 10 • Study the novel “Chinese Cinderella” • Immigration

  4. OTHER AREAS OF CURRICULUM HAVE EMBRACED ASIA • Food Technology - Asian food • Textiles -Kimonos, Batik dying, types of clothing • Enquiry Based Learning Unit in Year 8 Shift Happens and DVD Engage with Asia • LOTE – we teach 3 languages in Years 7 & 8 • Greek • Indonesian • Japanese

INTERNATIONAL AGENDA AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY • Emphasising the importance of enhancing our students’ Asian Literacy • Better integration of our International Students • Hosting of overseas students and teachers • In the last year we have hosted Japanese students from Glen Eira sister city of Ogaki • Hosted and developed a 3 week program for students from South Korea • A visiting delegation of teachers from a school in Hainan China
