Pleasanton ISD School Health Advisory Council

The Pleasanton Independent School District's School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) works to provide advice on coordinated school health programming and its impact on student health and learning. This report highlights the goals and activities of the SHAC for the 2014-2015 school year, as well as goals for the upcoming school year.

  2. THANK YOU! Every independent school district is required by law to have a school health advisory council (SHAC) of which the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district. The SHAC is annually appointed by the local education agency Board of Trustees. Texas Education Code Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 • A SHAC is a group of individuals representing segments of the community and school district which provides advice to the district on coordinated school health (CSH) programming and its impact on student health and learning.

Pleasanton ISD SHAC Goals 2014-2015 • Food and Nutrition Upgrade – New Menus, new recipes, student involvement (gardens) • Community involvement – Awareness of Fitness programs and other Health Curriculum used – working towards Community event • Community/ Staff Service – Back to School Bash and Staff Health Fair • Proactive/preventative programs for students • Summer Wellness programs and Learning Camps • Anti-drug – Utilization of resources from agencies at High School • Social/Mental Health – New curriculum at PIC and Jr. High • Physical - Coordinated PE – district inservice for coaches with CATCH program • Safety App rolled out at Jr. High Campus (School Safety Tracker)

Back to School Bash • 245 students served • Food was served: • Hotdogs- donated by Mr. and Mrs. Dan Higginbotham and HEB- cooked by the Higginbotham family • Chips- donated by community member • Water and pencil pouches- donated by South Texas Regional Medical Center • Bags of popcorn donated by Plestex Theatre • Supplies came from a variety of organizations: • School supplies donated by Church of Christ, Crosspoint Fellowship, First Baptist Church • Annette Carrasco provided backpacks. • Monetary Support came from a variety of organizations: • Funds donated by South Texas Sleep Diagnostics, HEB, Women’s Club of Pleasanton, and The PISD Education Foundation with a $3000 donation • Resources, goodies and information provided by 12 community service providers including HEBuddy and our local Police Department who acted as emcee for raffle drawings. • Fantastic Sams provided free haircuts. • Lions Club sponsored moon bounce. • DJ by Lillian Cashmer. • A big thank you to Ms. Howard and all the teacher aides from the high school for helping stuff and organize backpacks. • Overall a great turnout with room to grow for next year.
