  4. John Keats (1795-1817) Life 1. Tragic life -all of family died tragically except brother 2. Lived with and influenced numerous poets 3. Known for “Negative Capability” Works: Ode on Idolence, Psyche, Nightingale, Grecian Urn, and Melancholy Influence on Victorian Poets -he inspired Rossetti and John Ruskin -this inspiration is found in numerous works of Victorian medievalism Themes -Pursuit of Love and Pain -reflection of self

  5. William Blake (1757-1927) -influenced Art, Poetry, and Social Progress -Known for ability to stir emotion, and intellectual energy at the same time -was very religious Works: The Sick Rose, A Chimney Sweeper, and a Poison Tree Themes: anti-establishment, importance of children, and compassion

  6. “The Ancient of Days” “Angel of the Revelation”

Percy Bysshe Shelley -known for his philosophical relationship to his subject matter -believed that poetry exercised the imagination -imagination is the source of sympathy, compassion and love Famous Works- 1.”Ozymandias” 2.”Ode to the West Wind” 3.”To a Skylark” • Themes: appreciation of nature, joy, hope, and love • -typical romantic era themes

  8. William Wordsworth (1770-1850) -his impact was not noticeable until the Victorian era - “Titern Abbey” - “Lyrical ballads Themes: Nature, happiness of childhood, innocence, and power of the mind.

  10. Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) -Influenced by Percy Shelley, William Blake, and John Keat’s themes about politics -sage writer Works: “The scholar the Gipsy”, “Parting” Themes: anti-establishment, and nature

  11. Robert Browning Influenced by Percy Shelley “Pauline”-written in homage to Percy “Paracelsus” “Sordello” Themes: nature, power of the mind, and religion

  12. Elizabeth Barrett Browning • -wife of Robert Browning Influences Works: 1. “An Essay on the Mind with other poems” 2. “The Cry of Children” Themes: Evilness of slavery, religion

Dante Gabriel Rossetti -influenced mostly by gothic tales from Keats and slightly medieval Christianity for the most part Works -developed aesthetic Pre-Raphaelitism 1. “my sister’s sleep” 2. “The Stream’s Secret” 3. “Jenny” Themes -originally had an “art-catholic” stance -lacked sincere religious faith -emphasized spiritual value of intimacy Interesting fact: was a recluse that collected odd animals and blue china

Christina Rossetti -more famous than her brother -both are very similar though -broke gender barrier -Influenced by the pre-Raphiael group of poets -oddly though some religious elements can be found in her works Works: 1.”After Death” 2. “Goblin Market” 3. “A Pageant” -Themes: humility, fidelity, love, and mother hood.

  15. Alfred Lord Tension (1809-1892) -mental illness plagued his family -many fears -abusive father -raised to be a minister Works 1. “A farewell” 2. “After-thought” 3. “Ask ye why these sad tears stream” -poetry rejects Christianity in favor of a greater divine being
