William Cullen Bryant • William was an author who maintained his meter to create sound effects. • For example in his poem Thanatopsis he used meter in his line that stated “To him who in the love of Nature holds Communism with her visible forms, she speaks.” • Meter is a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry.
William Cullen Bryant • In William’s poem “The Death of Lincoln” he basically tells a story about how Lincoln was honored after his death. • Today this still happens. When a president dies they are honored, and they will always be remembered for all of the accomplishments they had during their time of presidency.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow • Henry was a poet who used rhyme in his in his poetry. • For example in his poem called “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls”, he used end rhyme by saying “Along the sea-sands damp and brown/ The traveler hastens toward the town.” • Rhyme is the repetition of vowel sounds in accented syllables and all succeeding syllables.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow • In his poem “Changed” he talks about how everything around him is constantly changing, and how time passes by before you can even comprehend everything that has happened, and then one day it’s just too late to do anything about it. • Elvis Presley was not expecting his fame to grow as quickly as it did in the 1900’s. He was living life to the fullest until one day when his life came to a complete stop. He died at the early age of 37. He still had many plans he wanted to pursue, but in the end it was too late.
Ralph Waldo Emerson • Ralph Waldo Emerson was a poet who used figures of speech and metaphors to get his points across in his poetry. • In his poem from Self-Reliance, one of his first lines says “at the conviction that envy is ignorance.” This would be an example of a metaphor. • A metaphor is a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things.
Ralph Waldo Emerson cont. • An example of Ralph using figures of speech would be when he said “Every heart vibrates to that iron string.” • Figures of speech are words or phrases that describe one thing in terms of something else and that are not meant to be taken literally.
Edgar Allan Poe • Edgar Allen Poe’s poem called “A Dream” is similar to Martin Luther King Junior’s “I have a dream speech.” • They both talk about how they want something so badly and they try their hardest to pursue the dream that they want to make a reality.
Edgar Allan Poe • Edgar Allen Poe was a poet who used alliteration, and onomatopoeia in his poetry. • A great example of onomatopoeia would be from his poem The Raven. One of the lines in this poem said “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.” • Onomatopoeia is the use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning.
Edgar Allan Poe cont. • A good example of alliteration in this story would be when Poe said “And the silken sad uncertain rusting of each purple curtain.” • Alliteration is the repetition of the same or similar consonant sounds in words that are close together. • Edgar Allen Poe was considered to be a dark romantic. He wrote about mysteries and love stories.
Edgar Allan Poe cont. • In Edgar Allen Poe’s poem “To My Mother” he used symbolism. This can be demonstrated in his line that recited “Because I feel that, in the Heavens above, The angels, whispering to one another, Can find, among their burning terms of love, None so devotional as that of a mother.” • Symbolism is a literary movement that originated in late 19th century France. In which writers rearranged the world of appearances in order to reveal a more truthful version of reality. • This poem demonstrates symbolism because it is contrasting the heavens and love to how strong a mother’s love is.
Oliver Wendell Holmes • Oliver Wendell Holmes is a poet who is known for using consonance, and also assonance. • For example in his poem The Chambered Nautilus he used consonance in the line that stated “Till thou at length art free.” • Consonance is the repetition of the same or similar final consonant sounds on accented syllables or in important words.
Oliver Wendell Holmes cont. • He also used assonance in his poem The Chambered Nautilus when he said “This is the ship of pearl, which, poets feign. • Assonance is the repetition of similar vowel sounds followed by different consonant sounds, especially in words close together.
Nathaniel Hawthorne • Nathaniel Hawthorne was a poet who used rhythm in his poetry. • A good example of Nathaniel using rhythm would be in his poem Go to the Grave. • One of his lines recited “Go to the grave, where friends are laid, and learn how quickly mortals fade.” • Rhythm is the alternation of stressed and unstressed syllables in a language.
