  1. WELCOME! AP English Literature Ms. Savanna Smith

  2. Goals for this year’s course: Explore literature through literary eras Develop critical reading and writing skills Analyze author’s use of literary devices to achieve a purpose and the effect of those devices on the work as a whole. Read and write extensively through a variety of genres

  3. WAYS TO EARN COLLEGE CREDIT • AP Literature and Composition exam—accepted by out-of-state colleges, need score of 3, 4, or 5 (counts as humanities credit—check with college, as each is different) • Dual enrollment - 3 credits through CGCC. (All in-state colleges and some out-of-state will accept this credit – check with the college) Counts as ENH 110—a humanities credit • CLEP tests (multiple choice/subject specific) • Check with the colleges to make sure which credits will be accepted. You may also go to www.collegeboard.org.

  4. DUAL ENROLLMENT QUESTIONS If you have questions regarding dual enrollment, check with your child’s counselor to answer your questions. Administration has tried to keep AP Literature and Composition as an AP-only class. Accuplacer Testing: Students who have not taken high school AIMS, the PSAT, the SAT, or the ACT are required to take the Reading Accuplacer Test (check with the counselors)

  5. Homework Students are expected to have assignments in on the due date, whether they are in class or not. Students can rewrite essays as a means of mastering content. Students must self-advocate and ask for help as needed.

  6. GRADING POLICY *40-40-20: Each quarter in a semester is 40%; the semester exam is 20%. * Classwork 10% Homework 15% Summative 35% Writing 40% I have designed this class so that each student may be successful. Students are able to rewrite essays after conferencing with me.

  7. ADVANTAGES OF AP • 50% of Arizona first-year college students don’t make it through their first year of college • This class will help engender the work ethic necessary to be successful in college and the work place. • This class will give the students analytical skills necessary to be successful in college and the work place.

  8. Miscellaneous Information • Visit my web page: If students are absent, they can keep up with the work • Infinite Campus grading system will allow parents to check online for grades—ask your student for the password • Scholarships available. Students should be considering scholarships now. • We will do assignments (College Majors Research and Personal Essay) to help prepare for college applications
