  3. Diversity and Inclusion • To comply with equality legislation • To make clubs more appealing to a wider audience of women • To increase our membership

  4. Equality Legislation • Equality legislation makes any form of discrimination illegal • There are 9 forms of discrimination

  5. Discrimination • Gender • Religion or belief • Sexual orientation • Age • Pregnancy and maternity

  6. Discrimination • Gender reassignment • Race • Disability • Marriage/civil partnership

  7. Discrimination Most of the 9 grounds are familiar Perhaps others are not so familiar

  8. Religion or belief Discrimination on the grounds of any religion, religious belief or similar philosophical belief is illegal.

  10. Forms of Discrimination • Direct • Indirect • Harassment • Victimisation

  11. Direct Discrimination • This occurs when a person is treated less favourably than another. • This could apply to any of the 9 grounds for discrimination

  12. Example of Direct Discrimination • A woman is turned away from a club because she is black, Muslim, disabled, a lesbian.

  13. Indirect Discrimination • Indirect discrimination occurs where a provision, criterion or practice which is applied generally has the effect of disadvantaging some people.

  14. Example of Indirect Discrimination Dress or appearance e.g a womanrefused membership because she wears a hijab, Star of David or Christian cross

  15. How might discrimination occur? • Refusal to allow a woman to join your club • Verbal comments • Less favourable treatment • Failure to make reasonable adjustment to enable • attendance at a meeting

  16. Discrimination in your Club? What should you do if you see discrimination? Remind your Club Executive about SIGBI’s Equality and Diversity Policy and the Equalities Act 2010. If discrimination persists seek advice from SIGBI Headquarters

Bullying and Harassment • Bullying and harassment is any unwanted behavior that is intimidating, humiliating or offensive. • Bullying and harassment can take many forms and occur for a variety of reasons. • It may be related to protected characteristics or the personal characteristics of an individual.

  18. Bullying and Harassment • It may be directed at one person or several people. • Often it takes place when there are no witnesses, but not always. • It can be persistent behavior over a period of time, but a one-off act may also count as harassment.

Bullying and Harassment What forms might bullying and harassment take? - unwanted physical contact - jokes, offensive language, gossip, slander - isolating someone from social activities - pressure to participate in committees or other groups - intrusion by pestering - not safeguarding confidential information about a member

  20. How to prevent Bullying & Harassment • Be familiar with SIGBI’s Values and Behaviours Policy • Behave in ways in Club which support open and fair discussions and decision-making • Be prepared to take action if you see a member being bullied or harassed by another member as previously described.
