Parable of the Laborers Matthew 19:16 – 20:16
Two Problems with this Parable • It is tied to the account of the rich young ruler
The account of the rich young ruler • What must I do… • Which commandments… • What lack I yet? • Go and sell and give… • And come and follow me. • He went away sorrowful • Disciples were astonished But many who are first will be last, and the last first. (Matthew 19:30 ESV) So the last will be first, and the first last.” (Matthew 20:16 ESV)
Two Problems with this Parable • It is tied to the account of the rich young ruler • Common understanding of the parable a mistake
The parable of the laborers • Master went out early to hire workers • Agreed with workers for a denarius a day • Master went out about 3rd hour and found more • Agreed to pay them whatever is right • Went out 6th, 9th, and 11th hour and repeated • At eve he paid them beginning with 11th hr work. • Dayworkers grumbled when they were paid
Who is lost in these accounts • Rich young ruler is lost (didn’t see the honor) • These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. (Hebrews 11:13 ESV) • Abraham, Issac, Jacob and the prophets saw it
Who is lost in these accounts • Rich young ruler is lost (didn’t see the honor) • By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. (Hebrews 11:24-26 ESV) • Moses saw it
Who is lost in these accounts • Rich young ruler is lost (didn’t see the honor) • The workers from the first hour are lost But many who are first will be last, and the last first. (Matthew 19:30 ESV) So the last will be first, and the first last.” (Matthew 20:16 ESV) FACT: This ruler and these workers would be welcome in any church in the country
What is the meaning of the parable? • Kingdom has a master looking for workers, looking for people wanting to work in his vineyard • Parable is meant to explain that the first will be last and the last will be first • Two classes of workers here • 1st hour workers who grumbled, • all the rest who were glad to be in the vineyard
Why no disappointment with an 11th hour conversion? • GLAD they got in the kingdom, going to heaven • SAD they weren’t in the kingdom for longer • ONLY grumbler is one who thinks he earns it • NOBODY goes deserving, fulfilling a contract
What is the meaning of the parable? • Kingdom has a master looking for workers, looking for people wanting to work in his vineyard • Parable is meant to explain that the first will be last and the last will be first • Two classes of workers here • 1st hour workers who grumbled, • all the rest who were glad to be in the vineyard • Different spirit between 1st hr wrkrs and the rest
