  3. Learning Goal • By the end of the class, student will be able to: • understand the classification of matter used by scientists • classify various properties of matter

  4. Minds On – What is it? • Activity: Post-it Pile Up – What is it? • Look at the objects on your table and start to ask questions • Write down a question on your post-it note, then observe and make another.

  5. Matter Has Many Forms • What is Matter? • Anything that has mass or volume • Can be solid, liquid, or gas… • Mass = a measure of the quantity of matter in an object • Volume = measure of how big an object is or how much space a fluid takes up.

  7. The Particle Theory of Matter… • Read the following article ‘The Particle Theory of Matter’. • Attempt to answer the following questions: • Who is Democritus and why is he important? • What did Democritus find out about matter? • Why do we care as scientists?

  8. Classifying Matter • ALL MATTER is made up of different types or combinations of particles. • E.g. gold & iron are both metals but they have different characteristics • Yellow & soft v.s. • Silver & hard

  9. Classifying Matter • Different types and combinations of particles give every type of matter particular characteristics, or properties. • PROPERTY – is a characteristic that describes a substance.

  10. Classifying Matter • Pure Substance = made up of only one kind of matter and has a unique set of properties

  11. A substance that cannot be broken down into any simpler substance by chemical means. Element

  12. Is a pure substance that is made from two or more elements that are combined together chemically. Compound

  13. Quick Lab – Pennies & Water • Let’s determine the special properties of water… • Lab: How many drops of water fit on a penny? • Use this lab to define the following terms; cohesion and adhesion

  14. Classifying Matter • Mixture = a combination of pure substances.

  15. Homework • A Summary of Matter Classification • Read p.g. 143 and create a mind map of matter classification • Include examples for each.
