  3. Philosophies Undergirding New Core Curriculum • The new core is learning outcomes focused • The curriculum allows for flexibility in aligning student’s general education experience with institutional missions and strategic plans

Minimal Requirements- Learning Outcomes • Identify Learning Outcomes for Each Core Curriculum Area: • Area A1- Communication Skills • Area A2- Quantitative Skills • Area B- Institutional Options • Area C- Humanities, Fine Arts, and Ethics, • Area D- Natural Sciences, Math, & Technology • Area E- Social Sciences • Area F- Lower- Division Major Requirements

Minimal Requirements- Learning Outcomes • Identify Learning Outcomes for New Overlay Requirements: • 1) Critical Thinking • 2) Global Perspectives • 3) U.S. Perspectives • Develop Plan to Ensure Achievement of #1 (ex. course, portfolio, or national test). • Identify Courses in Areas A-E to Satisfy #2 and #3 Above. • See KSU Proposal Developed and Approved by the General Education Council.

Minimal Requirements- Learning Outcomes • Approved by USGby Fall of 2011 • Implemented by Fall of 2011 or 2012 • Levels of Review • KSU (Fall, 2010) • General Education Council • UPCC (Undergraduate Policies and Curriculum Committee) • Additional Dissemination • Dean’s Council, Faculty Senate, Chair’s Council, Asst./Assoc. Dean’s Council • USG (System Office) (Spring, 2011) • Academic Advisory Committee (Area F Learning Outcome) • General Education Council

USG New Core’s Flexibility • Area A1: Communication Skills- At least 6 hrs (6 hrs) • Area A2: Quantitative Skills- At least 3 hours (3 hrs) • Area B: Institutional Options- At least 3 hours (4-5 hrs) • Area C: Humanities, Fine Arts, Ethics- At least 6 hours (6 hrs) • Area D: Natural Sciences, Math, Technology- At least 7 hours - At least 4 in lab science (10-11 hrs) • Area E: Social Sciences- At least 6 hours (12 hrs) • Total is 31 hours plus 11 hours flex • Note: Current USG credit hour guidelines are in parentheses.

  8. USG New Core’s Flexibility • The new core curriculum makes room for innovation. • Examples: An institution might expand Area B for interdisciplinary, theme-based, or QEP coursework.

  9. Full Reflection/Revision to Core Curriculum • Faculty Senate will form a Broadly-Based Steering Committee to Engage the Campus in a Reflection/Revision of the Core Curriculum Possibly Fall of 2011. • KSU is one of 32 institutions selected nationally participate in the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Shared Futures: General Education for a Global Century project.

Assessment of General Educaction • The USG requires that institutions regularly assess their general education learning outcomes. • General education assessment will be aligned with: • KSU’s AOL Processes and Plans • KSU’s USG Comprehensive Review Processes and Plans • KSU’s SACS Reaccreditation Processes and Plans
