Historical Background • Reza Shah powers abdicated by invasion • 1941 invasion of allied forces between August 25-September 17 • Purpose of invasion was to secure oil for allied forces • Iran primarily neutral • But Reza Shah friendly with axis (eastern front) • Mohammad Reza Shah assumes power September 16, 1941 • US assisted coup d’etat- due to oil nationalization by Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh

Property-Carter • Executive Order 12613-Prohibiting the importation and the exportation of any goods or services from Iran-Reagan • The Iran & Libya Sanctions Act (ILSA 8/5/1996)--renamed ISA in 2006 after Libya was excluded . • Exec. order 12957-prohibiting U.S. Trade w/ Iran’s oil • Exec. order 12959-prohibiting US trade w/ Iran • Executive Order 13599 (Feb 5,2012)-Blocking Property of the Government of Iran and Iranian Financial Institutions • Joint Plan of Action-halts expansion of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for temporary and modest sanctions relief

  6. Joint Action Plan • Iran succumbs to sanction pressures • November 24, 2013- Iran halts expansion of nuclear program in exchange for temporary & modest sanction relief • Inflation 50% in 2013 • Economy shrank 5% in 2013
