Hadley circulation is inefficient at transporting moist static energy poleward because: Surface branch, which is equatorward, carries latent heat toward equator Upper branch, which is poleward, carries potential energy poleward Sensible heat is poleward aloft but equatorward in lower troposphere Sum gives moist static eenergytransport, and owing to cancellation of these offsetting terms, the total is near zero. Some transport of kinetic energy, but largest at subtropical edge where zonal winds increase towards middle latitude jet speeds There are no significant ‘eddy fluxes’ of energy in the tropics, which are primarily responsible for transporting heat/energy poleward in middle latitudes. The oceans dominate heat transport in low latitudes.
