  1. Welcome to the 2016-2017 basketball season

  2. Be the PIG? “The difference between involvement and commitment is like having bacon and eggs for breakfast. The chicken was involved, the Pig was committed.” It’s about committing to playing the game the right way. It’s about committing to living the right way.

  3. Coaching Staff Head Coach: Jon Rakiecki: Junior Varsity Coach: Brad Davison Sophomore Coach: Keylend Wright Freshmen Coach: Shane Redman

  4. Wizard Culture: Cultures is the characteristics of a particular group of people “Within my pursuit of excellence I found my best and we found ours.” Foundation:The foundation of our program is rooted in the daily pursuit of our best. The goal each day should be improving and growing in all avenues of our maturation. It is within this process that we can all experience the peace and satisfaction that comes from pursuing our best. Pillar 1: Servant Leadership: To lead is to serve. We will be the leaders of our school and throughout our community. We will prioritize our teammates, our team, and our program ahead of ourselves. Pillar 2: Commitment:We are willing to pay the price that greatness requires. Everyone wants to be their best, but not everyone is willing to do what it takes each and every day to reach their potential. Pillar 3: Hard Work: We will be proud of how hard we work on and off the basketball court at Windsor High School. 95% of basketball occurs when no one is watching. 5% is Game Day. 100% of the 95% will be revealed during the 5%. Pillar 4: Humility: Our inadequacies will fuel our pursuit of excellence. The humble man makes room for progress, the proud man believes he is already there. Pillar 5: Family: When it’s all about you, you do what’s best for you. When it’s about something bigger, your family, you do what’s right for them, not what is best for you. We will play for each other, not with each other.

  5. Program Mission Statement The Wizards boys’ basketball program is dedicated to the well rounded development and maturation of each student athlete. In this program, the game of basketball will be used to develop servant leadership, commitment, hard work, humility, and a sense of brotherhood and family. Players who graduate from this program will have all the tools necessary to successfully contribution to society.

  6. Being a part of a team Being a part of a team is a huge responsibility. It means we hold ourselves accountable for our behavior, how we treat others, and how we uphold the Windsor Wizard culture. As a coaching staff, we strive to make the best decisions possible. In this program the team comes before the individual and the program comes before the team. All of us sacrifice part of ourselves for the betterment of the team. The name on the front of the jersey is bigger than the name on the back. We constantly try to make the best decision possible for the entire good of the TEAM and PROGRAM. • Playing time is based on the level of trust the coaching staff has on the player's ability to execute the details of their assignment at a level that gives our team the best chance of winning. All while portraying the character and integrity expected from a member of the Windsor High School boys basketball program. • There will be over 40 players in this program. Not everyone will play equally and that is okay. That is what it means to be a part of a team. Everyone on the team has to sacrifice part of their own personal agenda to be a part of the team, it is part of the deal. The value of each team member is not determined by the number of points they score or minutes they play, it is what they contributed to the team both on and off the court. • A great player is one who brings the level of his teammates play up while giving himself selflessly to the cause. Individuals score points, but teams win games.

  7. Practice, Game Day, and General Expectations -Academics We take pride in the word “student athlete.” Players will work just as hard in the classroom as they do on the floor. Social Media Think before you hit send. Any post on any social media site that we feel represents the Windsor Community in a wrong way, will be be subject to punishment. Nutrition and Hydration Please plan ahead for any road games with proper/healthy snacks. If meals happen to be provided, we will let you know ahead of time. Practice Expectations Practice will not be easy and we expect every player to show up on time ready to play. Any missed practices are unacceptable unless coordinated ahead of time. Game Day We will dress as a team. Go buy a nice shirt and tie if you already do not have one. Dress attire will be decided the day before the game. Players are expected to arrive an hour before tip off unless noted otherwise. If you play the second game, show up before the first game. All players are expected to ride the bus home from away games. Cell Phones Coaches will collect all cell phones when they arrive at the gym or prior to getting on the bus. Certain circumstances will allow players to use their phone to contact family, etc. Communication Expectations Allow the player to be the main source of communication. What is appropriate/inappropriate conversations?

  8. Communication Expectation www.windsorwizards.org (Create fan account) Twitter @WindsorBasketb2 -Concerns to discuss with your son’s coach are mental and physical treatment of son, ways your son can improve, concerns about your son's behavior.Inappropriate areas of concern to discuss with your son’s coach are questioning of strategy or play calling, another player on the team.Protocol for Parents/Players communication with coaches to address a concern:1) A player meeting must be set up first. Coaches will not grant meetings with parents untilthis occurs.2) After the player/coach the player and his parents may schedule a meeting with thecoaching staff.a. I would encourage all parents to think about what their son may learn as aresult of a player, parent, coaching staff meeting.i. Keep in mind playing time is earned each and every day in practiceand may fluctuate throughout the season.ii. When you play a team sport, not everyone will play. For those whoplay, the playing time will not be equal.3) Lastly, if need be, the entire staff, Athletic Director, and an administrator will sit downwith the player and parents to make sure the issue gets resolved in a respectful manner.

  9. The Role of Parents • Congratulations parents, you are also a member of the WHS boys basketball program. • Parents have an important role on this team. • Moving from supervisor to Consultant • Support and letting go • Release your son to the game • Have you allowed this experience to be his and his alone? • What to say before a game? • Have fun • Play hard • I love you • What to say after a game? • Did you have fun? • I’m proud of you • I love you

  10. Parents Role To support the program’s rules and policies. To be a fan of the team. To model the philosophy and culture of the program. To support your son unconditionally. To abstain from “suppertime coaching,” remember you are a fan. To participate in fundraising efforts. To refrain from critiquing other players. To be an energy giver not an energy vampire. To always keep high school athletics in perspective.

  11. Want to get involved? I need parents who would like to plan and organize the following: • Team Dinners: • Senior Night • End of the Year Banquet If you are interested, please let me know and I will put you in contact with other parents who have expressed interest.

  12. The Terwilliger Family This family has spent the last 3 1/2 to 4 years going through a financially, mentally and physically devastating situation in which the father has gone through five spine surgeries in the last 2 1/2 years alone. It has taken a toll on the family and been very difficult and now just one of life's curve balls has been thrown at them. The father and mother found the fathers dad on a Sunday afternoon at his house dead on the floor and just two days later they got a confirmation phone call from the doctors confirming that the wife Lainey has cancer. They have done surgery to remove the melanoma from her ankle and the lymph nodes from her groin and tested the lymph nodes and it has spread to the lymph nodes and they also then had a pet scan done and found a spot on her left lung. She is going to be going through treatments for the next 12 months. This has been terrible news for them. It's going to be a long road and is going to take a toll on an already stressed, mental, financial, and physical situation please keep the family in your thoughts and your prayers.
