Towada Art Center was opend in the spring of 2008 as the hub of the “Arts Towada" project which is promoted by Towada City, Aomori Prefecture to revitalize the city with art.“Arts Towada" is a project to create more attractive and beautiful scenery by transforming the Kanchogai-dori Street in Towada City into a museum and displaying art works on the street. Many ideas to show the history and the nature of Towada City are also taken in. The project intends to give an impression of Towada City as a city with a strong individuality, “the city of art" and “the excitement creation city," both at home and abroad. At the permanent exhibition, 22 works by 21 artists from 12 countries such as Yoko Ono and Choi Jeong Hwa are exhibited. Most of them are large art installations. Each work is exhibited in a separate room and the rooms are connected with glass corridors.
This structure helps visitors have a feeling as if they are taking a walk in a city as they go around the museum. It is an open structure with each exhibition room, big and small, having large glass openings toward different directions. It looks as if the works are displayed toward the city.Various events and special exhibitions are held as well as the permanent exhibition. The Kanchogai-dori Street is the symbol of Towada City. A row of 156 cherry trees along the street come in to full bloom in late April every year.City, architecture and art are combined together and become a museum. Please experience the museum with a new style. Photo image: Yayoi Kusama“Love Forever, Singing in Towada”
