Industry: Before Oil • Before the discovery of oil, the Texan economy relied heavily upon: • Lumber • Cotton • Coal and Iron • Flour Milling
Discovery of Oil • Spindletop, 1907: • The discovery of oil in Spindletop set off a wave of spin-off industries that transformed the Texan economy, such as: • Tank Cars • Machine Shops • Pipelines • Refineries
Country to City • With the emergence of new industries, many farmers moved to the city to assume factory work. • Unfortunately, the Texas government was not prepared for the changes that lie ahead. Consequently, there were major problems. • Yellow fever • Polluted drinking water • Hunger • Factory injuries • Child Labor • Corruption
Local Level Reform • To circumvent the problems that came from an urbanized society, the Texas government began making reforms pertaining to: • Clean Water • Inoculations • Garbage pick-up • Zoning laws • Construction of city parks and playgrounds • Training for police and firemen
State Reform • The State of Texas instituted the following reforms: • Poll Tax • Direct Election of Senators • Child Labor Laws • Compulsory school attendance • Prohibition • Women’s suffrage • State FDIC
National Reform • National Reform included: • Sherman Anti-trust Act • Pure Food and Drug Act • Forest Reserve Act • Prohibition • Hepburn Act • Federal Meant Inspection Act
