  3. Childhood and youth • Birth name: Alfred Joseph Hitchcock • Born: August 13,1899, Leytonstone, London, England • Family: William Hitchcock (1862-1914), Emma Jane Hitchcock (1863-1942) • Education: • St Ignatius College, London • School for Engineering and Navigation (14 years old)

  4. Pre-war British career • 1920 - fulltime job at Islington Studios: designing the titles for silent movies • 1926 - the first film The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog • December 2,1926- marriage with his assistant director Alma Reville

  5. Hollywood • 1940-He made his first American movie Rebecca.It won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1940 • Second American film - the European-set thriller Foreign Correspondent • 1941-Suspicion marked Hitchcock's first film as a producer as well as director • 1942-Saboteur was the first of two films that Hitchcock made for Universal(a studio where he would work in his later years)

Peak years and decline • 1951 -Strangers on a Train, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith • Vertigo(1958),North by Northwest(1959), Psycho(1960), and The Birds(1963) • 1976 -Family Plotwas his last film • He was created a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in the 1980 New Year's Honours • April 29,1980 -died from renal failure in his Bel-Air, Los Angeles home, aged 80
