  2. Names • Scientific Name: Acinonyx jubatus • Common Name: Cheetah

  3. Description • A spotted, slender, sleek, graceful, swift predator.

  4. Natural Habitat • Found in the wild only in Africa • The cheetah prefers to live in an open biotope, such as semi-desert, prairie, and thick brush

  5. Fast Facts • Height: 2 ½ -3 feet (.8-.9m) at the shoulder. • Weight: 110-140 lbs (50-64kg) • Top Speed: 70mph (113 km/hr) • Lifespan: 10-12 years

  6. Reproduction • Mating Season: Throughout the year. • Gestation: Around 3 months. • Litter size: 2-4 cubs

  7. Diet • Cheetahs eat mainly gazelles, wildebeest calves, impalas and smaller hoofed animals.

  8. Population • In 1900, there were over 100,000 cheetahs across their historic range • Today, an estimated 9,000 to 12,000 cheetahs remain in the wild in Africa.

  9. Endangered • Why: • Loss of habitat • Hunting pressure • Poor parenting behavior • Reduction in prime food supply • Poor resistance to disease
