  3. Math Olympics • Started around 1990 • Whole 5th grade • Overhead projector and folders • It’s for FUN!!!! • No prizes or punishments • No buzzers = Fail (2 years) • Buzzers around 1994

Math Olympics • Procedures • Problem Solving atmosphere (not for speed) • OK to make mistakes • better to try and fail than to not try • Students sign up 2-3 weeks ahead • 4 students per round • some students in two • group rounds had five if needed • Practiced with group at various times • practice sheets/website/answers • Needed: Scorekeeper, Buzzer clearer, video/pictures, adult with each homeroom (mine)

  7. Math Olympics Whole 6th Grade (All on computer) HS Auditorium Calculator/Pastures = “Cow”culator Round Jeopardy (Name that fact) 24 (added fractions/decimals) Lightning/(Number Talks)-Mental Math Problem Solve/Puzzle Tables Figure it Out “Turtle Round” “Between the Rounds” Round

  8. Math Olympics • Went to “In-Class” Math Olympics • Not as spectacular but more involved • 4 teams in class • round participant • scorer • “clearer” • video • video editor • Kids create puzzle tables • Show video
