  2. Classroom Facts • This is a grade 5 /6 class • We are in Room 203 • There are 26 students in this class • Mrs. Bluhm is our teacher • We love to learn!

Student Responsibilities and Expectations Students are responsible for: • Their school materials • Their belongings • Their assignments (in-class, homework, projects) • Their actions, words and attitude Students are expected to: • be respectful to all students, teachers and guests of the class and school • have proper manners • be safe and responsible • be on time and ready for school • finish your work on time and with care • work quietly during independent seat work and co-operatively during group work • follow instructions carefully • take care of personal and school supplies • follow the rules of the classroom and school • participate and try your best!

What will the students be learning about? • L.A. • Spelling • Non-fiction comprehension • Different forms of writing • Proofreading and editing • Media literacy • Literature circles • Poetry • Math • Start with patterns and numeration • Science • Human body, light and sound and natural resources • Socials • Grade 5 start with mapping and immigration • Grade 6 start with mapping and learning about different cultures

  8. Grading Structure A 86-100 Excellent B 73-85 Very Good C+ 67-72 Good (meeting curriculum requirements) C 60-66 Satisfactory C- 50-59 Minimally meeting Work Habit and Behaviour Comments G Good S Satisfactory N Needs improvement

Homework • Homework is generally assigned Monday thru Thursday • Assignments are written in agenda everyday with due dates • Students could spend an average of 50-60 minutes, depending on grade level • If your child is unable to complete homework, please inform me of the reason either via email, agenda or note form; without a note, the student will be asked to write a letter of explanation which will be placed in their personal file • 1 mark will be deducted for each day the work is late Please inform me if your child is spending more than an hour completing assignments.

Reading • Students should be reading every night and on weekends • Encourage your child to read a variety of fiction and non-fiction books • Please check to ensure that books are at an appropriate level for your child; check my website under TIPS to see how to help your child choose just the right book! • Take a few moments to read with your child to see how well they are reading and understanding • Students are given time for quiet reading in class at the start of the day and after lunch. Students are welcomed to bring in their own books to read

Ways to Support Your ChildAt Home • Work together to determine a routine that works for everyone • Have your child review items in the agenda to make sure that they have an understanding of what they are to do; if they are unsure, check the website • Set aside a consistent time after school for doing work and for reading • Encourage your child to stay organized with school work/materials • Foster independent learning and thinking • Encourage your child to try their best
