  1. Sustainable development first used in 1987 in a report Our Common Future “development that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” regardless of the environmental impactor without environmental degradation? What do you think? IBO Environmental Systems and Societies Syllabus document (IBO 2007)

  2. Sustainable development Development that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs and without degrading the environment IBO Environmental Systems and Societies Syllabus document (IBO 2007)

  3. We do not inherit the world from our ancestors but borrow it from our children! Native American proverb

  4. increases reduces satisfy destroy increases safeguards • A type of development which ....................... resources for future generations. • ............................. people’s standard of living • Doesn’t ......................... the environment • Aims to ..........................basic needs rather than large scale developments • ............................. waste • ..............................efficiency and recycling

  5. Sustainability and natural capital and natural income To be sustainable we must do what to these: • Natural capital • Natural income • Degradation

  6. 1. Ensure natural capital is not used up 2. Only use the natural income (or less than it) 3. Ensure resources are not degraded

  7. Sustainable development: What would be sustainable ideas for: Energy sources: Agricultural practices: Transport: Population: Waste: Tourism:

  8. 7.1.4: OUTLINE KEY HISTORICAL INFLUENCES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MODERN DAY ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENTSay which is which: People, book, film, report, events, disasters, groups, conferences… Timeline: 1864: “Man and Nature” 1930s: Dustbowl, USA 1956: Minamata 1961: WWF 1962:”Silent Spring: 1984: Union Carbide 1971: Greenpeace/Friends of the Earth 1970s: Nature has an intrinsic value philosophy/ we are stewards of the Earth not here to exploit it 1972: “Limits to growth” 1972: Stockholm Conference 1975: CITES 1979: Gaia 1985: Antarctica scientists 1986: Chernobyl 1987: “Our Common Future” 1987: Montreal Protocol 1988: IPCC 1992: Rio Summit, Agenda 21 1990s: Ecofriendly people, holidays, products 2005: Kyoto protocol 2006: “An Inconvenient Truth” 2009: 20-20-20 When did sustainability really come about?

  9. Sustainable yield SY is the increase in natural income So - At the beginning of the year there are 10 cows. At the end of the year there are 12 cows. SY = 2 cows January 1000 kg of biomass in a wheat field July 3000 kg of biomass. SY = If you kill more than 2 cows or take more than 2000kg of wheat – then you are destroying the natural capital. This is UNSUSTAINABLE.

  10. It is sometimes dangerous to harvest the maximum SY – just in case something goes wrong e.g. a disease spreads and kills some of the cows. Safer to harvest the optimal sustainable yield.

  11. Mkomazi Game Reserve, Tanzania Hunting of elephants allowed. Population 750. In one year researchers counted 60 births and 55 deaths. 10 bulls left the reserve. 15 new elephants arrived. SY: Poachers killed 8 for trophies. Is this sustainable utilisation?
