  1. SBI 4U (From SSO OA) The Nature of Science Doing “How to Know” VS. Knowing How to Do

  2. SCIENCE IS A STRUCTURED: APPROACH TO INVESTIGATING THE WORLD AROUND US WAY OF “CHECKING” - A WATCHDOG SYSTEM METHOD OF COMMUNICATING KNOWLEDGE

  3. THERE IS A FOCUS ON BOTH ASKING AND ANSWERING IMPORTANT QUESTIONS The “Western” approach to viewing the world is PRAGMATIC. The tendency is to avoid PSEUDO-SCIENCE and/or the SUPERNATURAL. Other cultures and countries adopt MYSTICISM and the influence of DEITIES.

  4. Scientists have developed the Scientific Method or Cycle of Proof. Definition: A method in acquiring knowledge and establishing laws and principles pertaining to natural phenomena based on observation and experimentation.

  5. Data Base Hypothesis Prediction Experiment Verification of Hypothesis? NO YES Add to the Data Base SUPPORT HYPOTHESIS MODIFY - DISCARD HYPOTHESIS (null)

  6. DATA BASE: problem presents itself; what is already known HYPOTHESIS: tentative explanation for a problem; “perhaps” PREDICTION: predict the result of your experiment; “if I do this, this should happen” EXPERIMENT: design an organized inquiry VERFICATION of HYPOTHESIS: in true science a negative result is as good as a positive result ADD TO THE DATA BASE: from new insight

  7. IMPORTANT POINTS • Data base makes hypothesis possible • Modified or discarded hypotheses lead to increased insight concerning the topic • Prediction and the experiment are obviously closely connected • Verification may lead to further study - perhaps narrowing the original question (a reason behind seemingly absurd studies - a criticism of modern science)

  8. REVIEW THE CYCLE of PROOF Potbellied Carp DDT and Bird Populations READ Orange Man (SIS p. 14) The Care of Brenda B. (P&D p. 24)

  9. Your assignment is to find an article (preferably written text) that describes the Cycle of Proof adding to the data base. Photocopy the article and breakdown the article into the elements of the scientific method. Submit the annotated article AND a one (1) page summary outlining your dissection of the article.
