History and proposal of APRU/RS on Earthquake and Tsunami • First RS: Kyoto, August 31-September 2, 2005 • Sponsor: Kyoto University • Second RS: San Francisco, April 21-22, 2006 • Sponsor: Osaka University & US Berkeley • Third RS (proposed): Jakarta, June 22-23, 2007 • Sponsor: The University of Tokyo • Cooperation: University of Indonesia • Field trip to Banda Aceh will be planned (June 24-26) • Anticipated participants: about 100

ThemeDiversity of Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcanic Phenomenaand their Hazards • Pacific Rim is “Ring of Fire” where geological hazards are concentrated • Review and share knowledge on various aspects of Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Volcanic phenomena and their hazards around the Pacific Rim • Provide interdisciplinary arena for natural science, civil engineering and social sciences • Discuss and propose effective countermeasure for mitigating geological hazards

  4. Ultimate Goal • Understanding of natural disasters • Find better way for mitigating disasters • Develop sustainable societies against • natural disasters
