  2. Late Antebellum Period • The Leadup to 1850. The Civil War is a war that was decades in the making. • A few American principles/beliefs started to boil over by 1850 and tear the North and South apart North South

The Real Compromise of 1850 • CA wants in as a Free State • Yes…16-15!! • TX and NM fighting over state borders • NM gets land • TX has $10 million debt • Gets debt taken by the Fed Gov • Whigs want DC to abolish slavery completely • Just the trade of slaves, but slavery still exists in the capital • South wants tougher Fugitive Slave Act… • Yes!!!!   23. Fugitive Slave Act • Ordered citizens of the USA to assist in the return of enslaved people who had escaped their owners. • No Jury trial for escaped slaves • Whites who help(ed) runaway slaves could be fined or imprisoned • Reactions to this?  • More on this later
