  1. Charles H. Spurgeon Everywhere there is apathy. Nobody cares whether that which is preached is true or false. A sermon is a sermon whatever the subject.

  2. What must Israel do to be Saved? Romans 10 Pg. 836 (pew Bible)

  3. Let’s Read Romans 10

  4. Romans 10:1 Paul writes to: • Brethren [other Christians], • my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel [those of the seed of Abraham] is, that they might be saved.

  5. Question What do they need to be SAVED from?

  6. Biblical Fact If Paul described orthodox Jews as people who needed to be saved 2000 years ago, there is NO reason to think God has a separate plan of redemption for Jews.

  7. Zeal for God Romans 10:2 • For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, FACT: You can have a sincere zeal for God and be cast into the lake of fire for all eternity.

  8. Zeal for God Turn to Matthew 7:22

  9. Zeal for God Romans 10:2 • For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. • Knowledge matters • Your belief system matters • All systems of religion are NOT =

  10. Ignorance is NOT an excuse Romans 10:3 • For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

  11. Biblical Fact 1. Followers of Christ are not trying to establish their own righteousness before God.

  12. Biblical Fact 2. Followers of Christ have submitted to the reality that they need God’s righteousness.

  13. Romans 10:4 • For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. Commentary • Faith in Christ ends the pursuit of obeying the law enough to mitigate God’s wrath

  14. 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. 5For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. 6But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believein thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believethunto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  15. What is faith (belief)? Given by God, faith is the confident trust in the promises of God and the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ without any tangible proof.

  16. Romans 10:5 • For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. • Fact • If a person could perfectly keep the law of God it would lead to life.

  17. The Mosaic Law is God’s tool to show man how much he needs a Savior. Galatians 3:24

  18. Application The way a person answers the question: “How do you know you are going to heaven?” will determine whether they are going about doing things to earn God’s favor.

  19. Two Different Systems Romans 10:6 • But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, • Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

  20. OR Romans 10:7 • Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) Exploits like this are NOT necessary to be saved.

  21. The righteousness that is based on faith is quite different. It does not require valiant exploits such as bringing Christ down from heaven or up from the grave (vv. 6–7). Paul quoted freely from Deut 30:12–13, substituting a phrase from Ps 107:26 (“down to the depths”) for “beyond the sea.” In pesher style he interpreted the verses in reference to the incarnation and resurrection of Christ. • Robert H. Mounce

  22. Biblically, the only thing you can tell someone they must DO in order to be saved is Repent and Believe; anything else is unbiblical.

  23. Question • You say REPENT (defined as a change of mind and purpose toward God), • what must a person REPENT of?

  24. Answer Anything that is keeping someone from putting their faith in the gospel of Christ, to the exclusion of everything else.

  25. Romans 10:8 • But what saith it? [Quoting Deut 30:14] • The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; You don’t have to go searching for faith.

  26. What do the Apostles Preach? Vs. 9

  27. Romans 10:9 • That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

  28. Romans 1:16 • For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

  29. Faith in Christ Saves ANDauthentic Faith always includes Repentance, Confession, Profession

  30. Authentic Faith • Believing People are characterized by • Repentance • Confession • Profession • Prayer Saved people don’t have to be asked to pray; they want to pray to the God who converted their souls.

  31. Romans 10:10 • For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness [justification]; • and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Paul is NOT establishing two different events here; this is Hebrew parallelism.

  32. Romans 10:11 • KJV: For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. • NASB: For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” • ESV: For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

  33. Commentary • The idea of being ashamed of the Lord Jesus is not in the apostle’s mind. • Rather, he says that the sinner who places his faith in the Lord Jesus will not be defeated, disappointed, or suffer a repulse in his life. Wuest's Word Studies from the Greek NT

  34. Characteristics of Saved People • Saved people are righteous. • Justified people are saved. • Saved people repent. • Believers confess God. • People who have received Christ are believers.

  35. How does one receive the indwelling Spirit of Christ? By Faith

  36. John 1:12 • But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, • even to them that believe on his name:

  37. Romans 10:12 • For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Atheist all get saved the same way—no difference!

  38. Romans 10:13 • For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. What does it mean to call?

  39. Romans 10:13 According to Wuest: • “Calling upon the Name of the Lord” is defined in verses 9 and 10. • Word Studies from the Greek NT : For the English Reader

  40. Romans 10:13 • To call upon the name of Jesus as Lord is to recognize and submit to His deity, His authority, His sovereignty, His power, His majesty, His Word, and His grace. Everyone, Jew or Gentile, who does so will be saved. • Romans Commentary

  41. Historical-Context Getting a Jew to call upon the Lord was NOT the issue—Jews were NOT willing to acknowledge that Jesus was the Christ—the Son of the One True Living God—that is the issue in this chapter.

  42. Merely mouthing “Jesus is Lord” and proclaiming that Jesus rose from the dead cannot secure salvation. Presumably the devil (see Jms 2:19) and many people (Mt 7:21–23) could meet these requirements and not be true followers of Christ. A heartfelt confession of Jesus’ lordship designates a lifelong commitment that issues from the center of a person’s being, the heart. What matters is not saying Jesus is Lord but making Him Lord at the core of one’s existence. This is what Paul really meant by calling on the name of the Lord to be saved (10:13). • The Apologetics Study Bible:

  43. Call • Calling cannot justify the sinner • Faith justifies • Calling cannot bring faith • Faith comes by hearing • Calling is a result of believing • See verse 14

  44. Romans 10:14 • How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? • and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? • and how shall they hear without a preacher?

  45. Question If you tell people that “praying a sinner’s prayer” is the same as calling on the name of the Lord, what will you say to them when they are doubting their salvation because there are no fruits of conversion?
