Breakout session 1a Feedback on the research framework • Questions to be discussed: • How can the research framework be further improved? What additional priority research questions should be included or how should the existing ones be changed? • How could existing projects best contribute to Future Earth and what new, integrated projects could you foresee falling within the framework?
How to improve the framework • Language/relevant terms (e.g. ESS, Sustainability, welfare, etc) • Linkages between themes and between themes and cross-cutting capabilities • Transdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity • Articulate difference theme 2 vs theme 3 • Articulate relation conceptual framework/themes • Education (under transformation) • Include local and indigenous knowledge
Key and missing questions • Evolutionary genetics • Sea level rise and vulnerability • Ocean acidification • Links land use change / agriculture and food systems / biodiversity • How to get transformation • GEC and local and indigenous knowledge • Local/regional/global impacts • Artificial chemical impacts • Social tipping points/ What are sustainability tipping points • What is sustainability in developed areas
Project contributions • Share experiences and practices of integration across projects • Projects can link to communities and share strategic partnership, bridge local impacts to global assessments • Need to develop common understanding of what constitute evidence across disciplines • Allow diversity of projects (bottom-up) • Need synthesis of existing knowledge, Future Earth-wide
Breakout session 1b Feedback on governance • Questions to be discussed: • How can the initial organisational design be further strengthened? • How best can the principles of integration of disciplines and the co-design and co-production of knowledge with users be implemented?
How to improve organizational design • Clustering projects across themes for both integrated projects and disciplinary support • Ex committee for faster decisions of GC. Drawing from SC and EC? • Clarify decision-making process. Engagement Committee vs Science Committee • Clarify role of Engagement Committee (very broad) • Authority and legitimacty (top level) vs relevance and communication (low level) • Need flexible mechanisms for committees to address changing priorities • Build on existing networks • SC members: some need track record of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. Need broad-base nomination • Need regional nodes • Relation of WCRP with Future Earth
How to improve co-design and integration • Co-design also at project level, not only top level • Build on existing stakeholder networks • Secretariat as bottom up facilitator (collect best practices and support network – needs resources) • Platform: create Workshops – meeting places • Brokering: FE is neutral broker • Regional nodes • Bring young people – funding mechanisms • Funding to allow project development before application
