  1. Bellwork Monday January 12, 2015 • What are the two types of digestion? • Give an example of each type of digestion. • What two organs are a part of the digestive system, but food does not pass through them?

  2. The Endocrine System Notes

  3. Introduction • Imagine that you are trapped in a damp, dark dungeon. Somewhere near you is a deep pit with water at the bottom. Overhead swings a pendulum with a razor-sharp edge. With each swing, the pendulum lowers closer and closer to your body.

  4. The main character in Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Pit and the Pendulum” find himself in that very situation. Here is his reaction….. • “A fearful idea now suddenly drove the blood in torrents upon my heart….I at once started to my feet, trembling convulsively in every fiber….Perspiration burst from every pore, and stood in cold big beads upon my forehead.” • He is TERRIEFIED!

  5. When we are scared our body has physical reactions to that fear…. • Sweating, rapid heartbeat, out of breath, etc • This mainly caused by the ENDOCRINE SYSTEM!

  6. Functions of the Endocrine System • Produce chemicals that control many of the body’s daily activities • Regulates long-term changes such as growth and development

  7. Structure of the Endocrine System • Endocrine glands: glands that make up the endocrine system that produce and release their chemical products directly into the bloodstream

  8. Endocrine Glands • Hormone: Chemical product of an endocrine gland • Function  Make up the messages of the endocrine system (turn on, turn off, speed up , or slow down the activities of different organs and tissues) that are carried throughout the body by blood • Target Cells: cells that recognize a hormone’s chemical structure • A hormone and its target cell fit together the way a key fits into a lock.

  9. Glands of the Endocrine System • Include: • Hypothalamus • Pituitary • Thyroid • Parathyroid • Adrenal • Thymus • Pancreas • Ovaries (in females) • Testes (in males)

  10. Hypothalamus • A tiny part of the brain near the middle of your head • The link between the nervous system and the endocrine system. • Create messages about basic body processes (sleep, hunger) • Sends those messages to the pituitary gland through • Hormones and nerve impulses

  11. Pituitary Gland • Located below the hypothalamus • Function  regulates other endocrine glands

  12. Negative Feedback • When the amount of a particular hormone in the blood reaches a certain level, the endocrine system sends signals that stop the release of that hormone.

  13. Notes: Backside • Use the textbook to complete the backside of your guided notes • Label the different glands of the endocrine system. • Match the gland up with its function

  14. Homework • Work on Study Guide for Test on THURSDAY!
