  5. 3. Renewableenergy in Colombia • Total: 28.1MW installed capacity • Wind power potential: 19.5MW • Solar power potencial: 6MW • Best solar resource area: Guajira • 6 kWh/m2 of radiation • 78,000 solar panels • Rural applications (57%), Communication towers and road signaling (43%)

  6. 4. Solar ResourceAssessment Table 1. Solar energy potential in Colombia Taking into account that the global maximum is approximately 2500 kWh/m2/year, potential in Colombia on this maximum varies between 58% in the Pacific Coast and 84% in the Guajira.

  7. 5. PhotovoltaicSystems • Rural Areas • Highgenerationcost Fig1. (a)Venturosa,Vichada 1996, Solar systemwith 2.8kWp (b) Pipeline Caño Limón-Coveñas, Photovoltaicsystemwith 3.4kWp

  9. 6. Solar Energy in the World Table 2. RenewableEnergy: Solar Energy in World. Source: http://gogreencyclopedia.blogspot.com/2012/01/renewable-energy-hotspots-where-they.html Colombia has a total capacity of almost 6 MW of solar power installed

  10. 7.1 ProjectsdevelopedbySensstech • Grid-Tie, PartmoIndustries 2011(Santander, Colombia) 30KW • The largest Photovoltaic solar plant Grid-Tie in Colombia. Fig4. Source:http://www.sensstech.com/

  11. 7.2 ProjectsdevelopedbySensstech • Grid-Tie, UDI, 2012 (UniversityCorporationforresearch) 21KW • Energy cost savings for the UDI; functional laboratory for students of various energy-related careers Fig.5 Source:http://www.sensstech.com/

  12. 7.3 ProjectsdevelopedbySensstech • Grid-Tie, Telecom, 2011. 3.2KW • Reduce power consumption required for the operation of a telecommunications towers. Fig6. Source:http://www.sensstech.com/

  13. 8.Conclusions • Although solar energy in our country represents 21% of renewable energy, this development does not correspond to capacity that could be installed using solar radiation potential assessed in areas like the Atlantic Coast and La Guajira and therefore is not yet comparable and competitive with foreign production. • The global solar energy is improving due to its great success in many countries and the growing environmental awareness is gradually taking over the world.

  14. 8.Conclusions • The business sector of Santander is betting on innovation and technological development of solar energy. More and more companies in the region are implementing new technologies in their production processes.
