  1. Crankshaft

  2. Crankshaft • The main shaft of an engine that, working with the connection rods, changes the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion.

  3. Camshaft

  4. Camshaft • Shaft containing lobes or cams that operate the engine valves when timed properly with the crankshaft

  5. Piston

  6. Piston • A cylindrical engine component that slides back and forth in the cylinder bore by forces produced during the combustion process.

  7. Flywheel Key

  8. Flywheel Key • A small block of metal alloy inserted between the crankshaft and flywheel to prevent damage to internal engine components in the case of sudden stoppage of the PTO shaft.

  9. Connecting Rod

  10. Connecting Rod • Rod that connects the piston, using the wrist pin, to the crankshaft. Rod cap completes the connection. Screws have fine threads.

  11. Armature (Magneto) Ignition Coil

  12. Armature • AKA Magneto: Part of an electrical motor or generator that includes the main current-carrying winding.

  13. Cylinder

  14. Cylinder • A round chamber of some depth bored to receive a piston; also sometimes referred to as bore or barrel.

  15. Reminder Horseplay is not allowed in the shop. Running, play fighting and other like acts will not be tolerated and will come to the attention of Mrs. Castillo. This is a work environment.

  16. Cylinder Head

  17. Cylinder Head • A detachable portion of an engine fastened securely to the top of the cylinder block that contains all or part of the combustion chamber.

  18. Dead Center • The extreme upper (top dead center) or lower (bottom dead center) position of the crankshaft throw at which the piston is not moving in either direction.

  19. Flywheel

  20. Flywheel • A heavy wheel in which energy is absorbed and stored by means of momentum

  21. Displacement • Using the formula given, calculate displacement for the following specs. • D =.7854 * B2 * S

  22. Displacement • In your vocabulary space, calculate displacement for the following: • Bore = 2.685, Stroke = 2.610 • Bore = 2.825, Stroke = 1.995

  23. Cooling Fin • An integral thin cast strip designed to provide efficient air circulation and dissipation of heat away from the engine cylinder block into the air stream.

  24. Admit Slip 12/11/2017 • Failing a shop class will put you on the counselors’ Do-Not-Enroll list for the following year for all shop classes, welding, wood and power mechanics

  25. Gasket • A soft, pliable material, such as fiber, rubber, neoprene (synthetic rubber), cork , treated paper, thin steel, or laminated material, used between engine parts to seal and prevent leakages

  26. Intake Manifold • The tube used to conduct the gasoline and air mixture from the carburetor to the engine cylinders.

  27. Piston Pin (Wrist Pin) • The journal for the bearing in the small end of an engine connecting rod. The piston pin also passes through the piston walls

  28. Vocabulary • What do you hope that you will achieve while a member of the Chowchilla FFA?

  29. Governor

  30. Governor 12/15/2017 • A mechanical, hydraulic, or electronic device that controls and regulates speed.

  31. Final Exam • Rounded to 130 points • A’s 117 and up • B’s 104 -116 • C’s 91 - 103 • D’s 78 - 90

  32. Blow-by 1/8/18 • A leakage or loss of pressure, often used in reference to leakage of compression past piston ring between piston and cylinder

  33. Filter

  34. Filter • A unit containing an element of varying degrees of fineness measured in microns. The screen or filtering element is made of various materials depending upon the size of the foreign particles to be eliminated from the air or fluid being filtered.

  35. Horsepower - Hp

  36. Horsepower - Hp • The energy required to lift 550 pounds (lbs) a distance of 1 foot (ft) in 1 second (sec) • Horsepower is abbreviated to Hp

  37. Clearance • The space between two parts, such as between a bearing and a journal. Measured to the .000” of an inch

  38. Backlash 1/18/18 • The clearance or play between two parts, such as meshed gears

  39. 1/18/18 • Your SAE Project as recorded in your FFA Record Book is worth 10% of your grade.

  40. 1/23/17 https://www.facebook.com/grandprix24/videos/1349578365103640/

  41. 1/23/17 Comment on the design of the L-Head concept and how you think it could be improved based on my comments during the video.

  42. 1/24/17 On the block day we will be putting together a Budget and your first journal entries. Please bring any financial information you may need with you.

  43. Ignition System • The means for igniting the fuel in the cylinder; includes spark plugs, wiring, armature, and kill switch

  44. Compression System 2/6 • The means for maintaining maximum compression including gaskets, rings, valves, and valve seats.

  45. Fuel System • The means for mixing air with fuel in a filtered, sealed environment and delivering that mixture to the combustion chamber.

  46. Cooling System • The means for an engine to displace heat from the cylinder and combustion chamber. This is achieved through thin aluminum cooling fins pulling heat from the engine block.

  47. Shop Card2/8&9 • The shop card will be filled out by you daily and you will be asked to score yourself honestly. Discrepancies will result in a “0” grade for the day as a reminder of the “honesty” requirement

  48. Shop Card2/8&9 • Write a brief description of the task you worked on that day. • Score yourself from 10 to 1 on ACTIVE participation • Safety glasses is all or none, and only counts when they are in front of your eyes.

  49. Cell Phone Policy • At no time are you allowed to watch videos or play games on your cell phone or tablet device. This is your warning, if caught you will get a guided study.

  50. Valve Clearance • Gap allowed between end of valve stem and valve lifter (tappet) or rocker arm to compensate for heat expansion.
