  2. ELA Standards • Arizona's College and Career Readiness ELA Standards. • http://www.azed.gov/k12-literacy/ela-standards/ The focus of this course will be to have students master the objectives set forth by the Standards for both Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

Grade Level Standards/Resources • Reading • Balance of literature and informational texts • Text complexity • Writing • Emphasis on argument and informative/explanatory writing • Writing from sources and citing evidence • Speaking and Listening • Inclusion of formal and informal talk • Language • Includes vocabulary and conventions • Stress on general academic and domain-specific vocabulary • Reading and Writing in History, Science, & Technical Subjects • Complement rather than replace the content standards

Parent Resources • By utilizing the district website, parents can access useful resources to help their child such as: • Homework Help for 7th & 8th graders • Teacher Website from Fremont webpage • The Student Planner contains valuable information including Silent Witness, student events, Text-a-Tip, and Rights of School Staff.

  5. St.A.R. Stay Safe Act Responsibly Remain Respectful Purpose/Vision Purpose: Increase desired behaviors related to academic success and achievement and decrease undesirable or ineffective behaviors. Vision: PBIS~PositiveBehavioral Interventions and Supports, or St.A.R. on Fremont’s campus, will promote a successful academic community that is motivated and goal oriented while creating a positive and respectful climate. This is a district initiative that is being implemented throughout elementary schools, junior highs, and high schools.

  7. St.A.R. Behavior Consequences • Students earn MIRs for the following: • Tardies • Electronic devices • Disrespect/ Defiance • Disruptions • (fidget spinners are not allowed) • Improper use of technology • Food or drink • Water only is allowed in classrooms • Students receive an ODR after 3 MIRs and consequences could include: • Lunch detention • Behavior Contract • In School Suspension (ALC) • Out of School Suspension

Eighth Grade English PLC Expectations • Students will come to class prepared and ready to actively engage in their own learning. • Warm-ups will start every class period and are expected to be finished within the first 5 minutes of the period. • Students need to remain seated while the teacher is instructing.

  9. Eighth Grade English PLC Expectations – Continued • Students are expected to request make-up work before or after the class period. • Students are given two weeks to complete missed assignments without a late penalty. After that time period, students will incur a 20% point deduction. • Students are allowed 2 retakes on certain assessments(This does not include essays or research). • Students have until the last week of the quarter to complete missing assignments and assessments, excluding essays.

  10. 8th Grade Calendar Parents and students should visit their teachers’ calendars to find out important information like what topics/concepts are being taught and important due dates. Teacher calendars can be found by going to the Fremont website, clicking on the STAFF tab at the top, and then locating the teacher’s name. Assignment due dates can also be found on the student’s portal. Each teacher updates his/her own calendar.

  11. 8th ELA Grading Policy • Assessments: 80% • As a team we are moving toward standards-based grading. This is a 3-5 year process and this is year 1. • Exit tickets (mini quizzes at the end of class). • Writing assessments such as essays, research papers, business letter, etc. • Reading assessments

  12. 8th ELA Grading Policy • Assignments: 20% • Independent practice on daily work (daily assignments and homework) • Warm ups • Notes

  13. Needed Materials • The following materials are necessary for 8th grade ELA: • Pencils (mechanical pencils/lead) • Pens (blue/black) • Loose-leaf notebook paper (college-rule) • Plastic, 2-pocket folder with 3-prongs (must be plastic). • Highlighters

  14.
