  5. Waters of the United States (WOTUS) • EPA/USACE proposed rule Jul 2017 to rescind the 2015 WOTUS definition • Supplemental proposal issued • Public Comment period underway • Public hearing held Feb 2019 • 60-day public comment period closes Apr 15, 2019

  6. PFAS - What are they? Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) • Manufactured/used in various industries since 1940s  • Extensively produced and studied • Very persistent in the environment/human body • Don’t break down, accumulates over time • Exposure can lead to adverse human health effects • Some PFAS chemicals no longer manufactured in U.S.

  7. PFAS and Water • Can be found in drinking water • Water systems required to monitor • Removed by activated carbon or high pressure membrane (RO) • Health advisories established • Summit held in Washington, D.C. May 2018 • EPA’s PFAS Action Plan Feb 2019
