Concept of Teamwork • Provide quality holistic health care to every patient • Teamwork consists of many professionals, with different levels of education, ideas, backgrounds, and interest, working together to benefit the patient. • Think about who is part of a team on a medical floor inside a hospital: • Nurse • Physician • Nursing Assistant • Unit Secretary • Physical Therapy • Occupational Therapy • Pharmacist • Respiratory Therapist • Name a few others…..

  3. Leader Responsibilities Organize Coordinate Encourage Motivate Assist with problems Monitor progress Provide reports and feedback

  4. Developing Good Inter-Personal Relationships • Must Haves: • Positive Attitude • Be friendly and cooperate with others • Assist • Listen • Respect • Open-Minded • Avoid Critizing • Good communication skills • Support and Encourage

  5. Professional Leadership Leadership: the skill or ability to encourage people to work together and do their best to achieve common goals Leader: individual who leads or guides others, or who is in charge or in command of others

Types of Leaders • Democratic Leader • Encourages the participation of all individuals in decisions that have to be made or problems that have to be solved. • Listens to opinions of others, and then makes decisions based on what is best for the group as a whole. • Laissez-Faire Leader: • Informal type of leader • Strives for minimal rules or regulations, and allows individuals to work more independent • Avoids making decisions

  7. Types of Leaders con’t • Autocratic Leader: • Often called a dictator • Maintains total rule, makes all decisions, and has difficulty delegating or sharing duties • Seldom asks for opinions, emphasizes discipline and expects others to follow the rules
