Research Area 2 • Vision: • To enable intelligent and automated operations of manufacturing by applying new models for work organization and planning and control. • Research challenges: • Planning and control • Lean and ICT • One-of-a-kind operations in the engineering industry • Work organization • Company-specific production systems (xPS)

Research Area 2 • The research is organised in twoworkpackages: • WP4 – Planning and control of intelligent operations • WP5 - Ideal Factory • Companies and people: • Companies: Volvo Aero, Pipelife, Tine, Benteler, Kongsberg Automotive, Teeness • PhD´s: Daryl Powel, Emrah Arica, Jonas Ingvaldsen, TorbjørnNetland, Taravatsadat Nehzati, • Arealeader: Heidi Dreyer, WP leaders: Erlend Alfnes and Johan Ravn • Research groups: SINTEF Teknologiledelse, IØT, IPK and University of Aalborg (DK)

  4. 2008-2011 The Ideal factory project created a concept describing the ideal factory for high-tech and mass customised manufacturing.

  5. ERP-Based Lean Implementation Process • Based on ERP Proven Path – methodology for ERP implementation • Systematic integration of lean practices within the ERP implementation framework

AUTOPART 2011-2014 Goal Develop concepts, methods and tools that enable focused spare part production in effective interaction with production of regular parts Vision Establish Raufoss as a "spare parts cluster" with world-wide leading competence in the production and delivery of automotive spare parts

Research Area 2 • International conferences • International Workshop of Advanced Manufacturing (IWAMA), Trondheim 22-24nd June 2012. • The 16th International Workshop on Teamworking (IWOT 16), Trondheim September 2012 • Co-publishing • More than 10 papers have been published in journals and proceedings together with international partners • Mobility • Torbjørn Netland is spending one year at Georgetown University, McDonough School of Business, Washington D.C., USA • Professor Hans-HenrikHvolby, Aalborg University is engaged in a Professor II at IPK, NTNU • PhD student Emrah Arica has visited the university in Aalborg, Denmark in order to discuss his research, 8th -16th March 2012

Research Area 2 (cont.) • Seminars and workshops • SMARTLOG seminar “Modern trends in production control: Lean and ICT”, Trondheim 7th March together with Professor Rik van Landeghem, Ghent University, Belgium • Daryl Powell presented with Prof. Jan Riezebos (Groningen, NL) at the Quick Response Manufacturing Conference in Arnhem, Netherlands 5th-7th June 2012 • Joint initiatives and discussions with international research partners • Workshop with Fujitsu and University of Aachen to work out proposal for Supply Chain Information Hub for the Eu-project. Copenhagen, Feb 2012 • Workshop in the EU 7th FWP project LinkedDesign - Linked Knowledge in Manufacturing, Engineering and Design for Next-Generation Production. • Workshop for develop a framework for Lean Product-service systems at the University of Bergamo, 16th-18th July 2012

Research Area 2 (cont.) • Joint initiatives and discussions with international research partners • Discussions of joint research project with John Bicheno and Simon Eliass at the Lean Enterprise Research Center in Cardiff, 13th of April 2012 • 4 exchange students were hosted at NTNU IPK / SINTEF Logistikk during Spring 2012. These were Fedele Francesca and MattiaMaestroni (University of Bergamo, Italy) who worked on the AutoPART project with Benteler Aluminium Systems, Raufoss; Andreas Binder (Leipzig University, Germany) who was directly associated with SFI NORMAN, and andXabierItoizBueno (University of the Basque Country) who worked on an integrated control and control studio concept. • Workshops with Shanghai University to organize and prepare The 16th International Workshop on Teamworking (IWOT 16), Trondheim September 2012 • Discussions with EESUN (European employee support network) group at Arbetstakarkonsult in Stockholm, March 29th. • Co-publishing, guestlectures and researchmeetingsbetween professor Geertvan Hootegem and professor Jos Benders, KUL Leuven and Monica Rolfsen and Jonas Ingvaldsen, NTNU.

WP4: Planning and controlof intelligent operations • Aim: • to develop new control concepts and models for use in real time operational settings which supplement the traditional MRP logic; • to enable automated and intelligent operations in the factory and throughout the supply chain. • Examples of research challenges: • Lean and ICT • Managing complexity and uncertainty in production control

WP5: Ideal Factory • Aim: • to develop models for joint optimization of technologically advanced production systems, control systems and high performance collaborative work organizations, particularly in the areas of high tech, partly automated manufacturing and in the project-type production of the engineering industry • Examples of research challenges: • Develop principles for management tasks and improve the knowledge organization • Increase use of technology through robust flow-oriented organization
