  2. About Henri Matisse Born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis on December 31, 1869 in northern France Started painting at the age 21 Became known for his bold use of color Stopped painting in 1954 Died November 3, 1954

  3. His break through • When Matisse was 19 he was suffering from depression. And to cheer him up his mom, Anna, gave him a box of paint to cheer him up and he said “From the moment I held the box of colors in my hands, I knew this was my life. I threw myself into it like a beast that plunges towards the thing it loves.” • In the early 1890’s he left to Paris to practice painting • His breakthrough happened in south of France in 1905 at the age of 30.

  4. Fauvist Still Life • Fauvist Still Life was inspired by Henri Matisse’s group he started in 1905 called the fauves. The group was made up of talented painters and himself. They joined together to create intense, colorful, and violent art work to catch the peoples eye. • Lasted two years • The first artistic movement of the 20th century.

  10. Paper cut-outs • After diagnosed with cancer Matisse continued his career in art from his wheelchair. He began making cut outs of paper and putting them together to create a piece of art that had the same significance as any other piece of art, but more bold and fun.
